Meh, looks like a big Tylenol.

We all know the "cool FAA Doc" who is really just a Class 1 factory. Precise medical tests these days can detect more problems at an earlier stage than ever before. I imagine most of the meds used to for treatment have not been aeronautically cleared. My life insurance guy told me that 40% of his clients under 60 cannot even qualify for long-term care insurance. That's just passing a 20 minute phone screen. IMO, if we see guys trying to open the age rule again they could truely be screwing ALL the pilots to ever come after them. But what do they care, they will most likely already be 60+ and "have theirs." Our unions should not be supportive of such a change.

Bingo. The Supreme Court has given deference to the government (state & federal) when their aim is safety. The only thing the 14th requires for age based classifications is that the restriction basis cannot be arbitrary or capricious. Average medical health of a particular group at a particular age is neither of these. The bottom line is that the government can discriminate, they just have to have a good reason to do it. Think air traffic controllers, at 56 they are out-- with a pension .

Hi!

ATC does NOT have a mandatory age 56 retirement age. If U want to keep working, you put in for it, and if the FAA wants to keep U, they keep U past age 56. Do U know that JAA two years ago put together an Age 70 committee? It could be worse.

I am sure that some day it will be. I am sure by the time the youngster in this industry get to retirement, it will be base on ability and a battery of medical test. Age may be out of the picture. This is both good and bad.

ITSALLGOOD,

I have to admit your right. Bad math on me. I'm still stuck in 2007. Correct numbers are 5 61 yr olds and 57 60 yr olds. This list is dated Jan2008 and I saw only one pilot retirement in the back of the 4th Q magazine but who knows if any left before that.

Maybe we will see a handful of the 60+ crowd retire when the equity gets deposited into our 401k. I know I would be waiting to see that money in the bank before I did anything that could complicate my payout. Probably wishful thinking.

Yeah, sure, next year could be the year this career starts paying off.

That's what has kept me in the game for 20 years.

I think most of the guys that are over 60 that are here are going to stay for for awhile. The equity payout will be nice but on the FNWA side the insurance post retirement once DCC happened pretty much sucks when compared to what was available prior. Also flying 3 trips a month to Asia that each trip is only 45 hours away from base is pretty cushy! I mean a lot of these guys are only gone 6 nights a month.

We do have some that were hired late and do not have much in the way of retirement thus financially they are staying....... Guess we will see once the equity is paid.

Management would love this

If that's the case, it sounds like the worst plan for pilots. "You must retire at age XX, unless management selects you for an extension." Better not be a union activist.

Don't mean to get technical but three trips to Asia each month would have you away from home a lot more than 6 days.

Nope, I am currently flying the aircraft..... We do a lot of 3 day trips that are turns to NRT, KIX, NGO. These trips are worth 25-27 hours each. You leave in the afternoon on day 1 fly to Asia spend the night and fly back. Time away from base is around 45 hours so you are only gone 2 nights. Do 3 of these a month and you are done! These are the senior trips.....
