Bill, Bill, Bill...Where's your sense of "constructive engagement?"

What I see as a result of constructive engagement is our combined company (Which we help facilitate with a smooth merger) will make more in two quarters than either one has since well before 2001. I see that as setting the foundation for constant gains if the momentum continues.

Have I been happy with some of the LOA's and other items? Nope, and I have voiced my opinion that we could have gotten "a little" more than we did. In the end of the day, the JPWA which was a non-bk contract was voted on and approved overwhelmingly by both sides of the premerger airline.

It is OK to want more and not to be satisfied on where we are. IMO the true beauty of constructive engagement is that you can take it away. If you noticed our Master Chairman's letter made national press today. That is how much the financial sector is watching not just our mouths but our feet. It was a letter and it was picked up by the new wires. That imo tells me a lot about the level of attention that is being paid to this group.
Of course everyone's noticing. How could they not? DALPA has a labor leader that believes in being in the middle of the pack in his labor contract - and has even devised a nice name for it: "Constructive Engagement." Now this leader is likely to be the next leader of ALPA national. This is a big deal.

Carl; you know I am not "new" to the alpa game. And talk about little quips, man. I am not love the bureaucracy. We both agree on the fact that there are issues with the bureaucracy at National, you just feel that nothing will ever happen and are throwing your arms up in defeat. Go see how many tricks a new pony may have. I may join you some day, but not today. I use the experience of my fellow aviators as reason enough to take pause.

Go ask how enforceable FeEx's contract was pre ALPA? Go ask Spirit if they really could enforce their contract and subsequent strike if they did not have ALPA's support. Notice the games being played at UPS with their group? Go ask AirTran why they joined ALPA in the middle of contract talks? (to name a few) (Yes they dropped the ball on Midwest)

ALPA is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. No one discredits that. As I have said before the benefits outweigh a lot of the negative. The others need to be dealt with.

Great. And now the national press and financial sector think we got a "raise" and are happy as clams. Do you honestly think this helps us in our effort to get back to the buying power this career has typically afforded for all but the most recent 6 or 7 years of its existence? Serious question.

Dots....

Boeing has added orders for 10 777s, including four from an undisclosed customer.
The balance, six orders for 777-300ERs from Cathay Pacific, were finalised on 22 September.
Boeing confirms that the number of 777 customers remains at 61, indicating the addition of four of the widebody aircraft are destined for an existing 777 customer.
A variant of 777 was not specified.

Cheers
George

Here is an interesting quote today from one of the architects of Airline Deregulation:

Mr. Levine said there are both good and bad things in the consumer-rights plan. He was less concerned by talk of industry reregulation than he was by the department's move to block a planned transfer of airport takeoff and landing slots involving US Airways and Delta Air Lines Inc.. That, he said, was exactly the sort of thing the 1978 deregulation sought to end.

I do not think that is why they are pay attention. They are watching to see if the relationship sours. Pilots that are playing along mean an airline that can make money. (Ref AMR's Q3 guidance)

I beleive that in is a good thing that we are engaged with our company and the financial world. I think that it is important on many levels. I also know that taking that away will not go unnoticed and will negatively effect the outlook of our company. So, yes, I think it will "help" us in the effort of restoration, but I also know that a successful corporation that can turn a min of 7-8% margins quarter over quarter helps too. No single item will solve all of the ills of this profession, but they will aid in it its progress.
