Amen to that.

After years in this industry, I say without a hint of sarcasm, "Eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may be furloughed, fired, or bankrupt." Prudent future planning in this business is a pointless waste of time.

However, it looks like the WHO will declare it a pandemic within a couple of days and that will prompt travel bans to countries that are infected. The sky may really be falling for legacy airlines if the WHO declares this a pandemic and people are dying in the U.S.

Some of the "experts" are saying it already meets the definition of a flu pandemic and the WHO is holding off for political reasons. As soon as we see deaths in the U.S. it will be declared a pandemic and travel to the U.S. may be halted until this is dealt with. A travel ban into the U.S. will drive ALL the U.S. legacy airlines into bankruptcy very fast. What would it do to Delta to have ALL international flights halted for a month while this flu things dies down??

That was my point, but I was trying to word it a little softer.....

It is a real issue for the bottom 20% of the list.

You afraid of scaring some of us?? :) Enjoy the pork chops. I was going to cut my grass today, but it snowed on it last night.

Yet another reason why I'm glad I stayed in the Reserves.

Think the EU already recommended not traveling to the US and Mexico, the Tamiflu type medication is typically only good if you had the infection for less than 24 hours. Still to early to make dire predictions.

The EU has "recommended" that people not take non-essential trips to the U.S. and Mexico. If the WHO classifies this as a level 6 pandemic, there are laws that will require all travel to infected countries be halted until the pandemic is under control. The only thing holding back the WHO from taking this from a level 3 pandemic to a level 6 pandemic is nobody has died outside of Mexico. As soon as people start dying in the U.S. it will go to level 5 pandemic and if people start dying in Europe it will go to a level 6 pandemic. I'll be very surprised if people don't die in the U.S. and Europe from this flu because 36,000 people die annually from the flu anyways. It will kill people in the U.S. and Europe if people are getting it. This will be much worse than $150 oil and a bad economy have been on us.

iceman49 04-27-2009 09:35 AM

It would depend on the genetic makeup of the strain of flu to bounce it to the next levels.

acl65pilot 04-27-2009 09:45 AM

Exactly. If this thing goes third and fourth generation from the source you will see a level five or six, but not until then. Today, it seems to be isolated, but they do expect it to increase scope, as you would with anything of this nature.
Also in the US the individuals effected are of younger age, which is good and bad.
