hey all,

i work for a hat optional airline, but thats not the point. i think many pilots that dislike hats are not necessarily whiners, but feel that the pilot hat is a bit archaic.

point given to those that say the hat gets crews more respect at international destinations--that said, many feel that the hat makes pilots look like sky caps at a hotel or somehow adds to the feeling of being a 'servant.'

in my opinion a pilot who takes care of him or her self (ie isnt overly fat), irons their shirt, doesnt wear black nike sneakers, and wears a crisp looking uniform, looks plenty professional and respectable. successful professionals in america often wear slacks, a sport coat or suit coat and no tie, yet they are still respected by their piers.

in the military its different, but to some, the hat in commercial aviation is a manifestation of management's ability to control and demean pilots that still do their jobs in a safe and professional manner every day, even though their pay has been cut and their career expectations have been reduced by massive proportions.

Guys,

I don't understand why there is such a big deal about wearing hats? Sometimes we sound like toddlers. The company asks for it - wear it. Tons of people don’t like tons of things about their jobs.

If you don't like it make sure it is the right size and looks good. Take it to dry cleaning once in a while with the rest of your uniform.
And besides, what's next? Backpacks, wrinkled shirts, dirty shoes? Spiky hear? Earphones? Nipples, visible through your shirt? Crying about how delta tickets should be flown by delta pilots? But from the way we look - what's the difference?
Maybe I am exaggerating here, but can we really ask for 100% pay restoration if we look like pilots who make $20/hour?

PS. NO, NOT RUNNING for CPO. No, not a Marine. Yes, worked for a company where hats were optional and didn't wear it for years. No, not balding. Yes, tired of seeing pilots who look like trash. Thx.
:)

Amen brother, well said! It's time some people started taking a little pride in how they look.

Maybe they use the hat rule as a "Pilot disgruntle-meter". As long as guys are beefing about hats, Management presumes that there is no serious need to address pay restoration issues.

Not really. It has only recently become used as a verb. The dictionaries are re-writing the word "ask" too though, so I guess it's OK.

You mean "ax"?

+1

I like the hat because it helps me cover up all my grey hairs. Plus, where do non-hat wearers put their change, cell phones, gum, ect. when they are going through security?
