You assume that the did not have a understanding. One thing I know is that our union leaders are anything but stupid. Admitting to a knowledge of anything means that "Intent" and "Interpretation" can be used against them in a court of law, an arbitration etc. Sometime it makes a lot of sense to play stupid even if it makes you look like a fool.
Especially in this time where there is a lot going on, it makes even more sense to not tip you had. You may not agree with their stance on an issue, but they are very smart and very calculated, so give them credit for that.

To see the look on the union folks faces when scope issues were brought up. Trust me and anyone else who was there, they do not understand this.
BTW, being smart and making good decisions are two completely different things. Look around, very smart people make very bad decisions everyday.

I don't think the ALPA lawyers were there, they said they had "consulted" with the lawyers. Of course more than once they did not understand the question that was asked and proceeded to give an answer that had nothing to do with the original question.
I was not all that impressed with their understanding of the SCOPE issues before us.. I think that is mostly because they don't see it as a priority as many of us do.

The "lack of understanding" of the way the CPZ flowback will work rubbed me the wrong way a bit- I don't particularly care if we publish our specific actions and stance on it, although I want to know they have a well laid out game plan. It's not like the guy that wrote the LOA isn't a phone call away..

I foresee 2012 coming around and DAL coming to us for scope relief for a number of different reasons. DC9's planned retirement, mass retirements beginning within the pilot group (65), and contract negotiations. One possibility is that they will say that with the number of retirements coming that they cant effectively staff the airline and will offer a little more money during the contract negotiations if we give up some more scope relief!! My hope is that we have people in the MEC that will/are drawing the line and let the pilot group and Mgmt know that SCOPE (our careers) arent for sale anymore. (this would be learning from previous mistakes and put an end to constant deterioration of OUR industry)
The last decade has been a disaster in our industry and with forward lookers in the MEC we can turn it around. Now is the time to learn from our previous mistakes and ensure it doesn't happen again.

Well said, I know a lot of really intelligent people that are extremely poor decision makers. The two do not go hand in hand.

I have actually talked to LM, and I can tell you exactly what he said:
To a group of NW guys:
"RJ are good for us, they fill up our 777's to Japan!"
-why can't mainline jets fill their own 777!
When asked about the CPZ question:
"Why are you complaining, your flying a very popular airplane, it's not going anywhere"
-As far as I know we don't come w/ the airplane, and I thought ALPA represents pilots not airplanes. He then turns his back to us in a very rude way, which tells us how he feels about us and our cause. Everytime I've asked our union reps about the CPZ issue they turn their heads away and avoid the question. I've never had a direct answer given to this situation.
