Maybe it's a base cultural thing, mb times are changing, or mb it's because there are a lot more older dudes, e.g. moi, hanging out in right seats. I'm referring to walk arounds more than anything. The occasional dinner or beer is nice when it happens. Truth be told, I've bought the CA dinner more times then not... but don't let that get out.

I agree with you wrt the base culture concept. I was based in ATL for a number of years as a FO. CAs never did walk arounds, and it was very, very unusual for one to buy beer, much less dinner. That's not to say it never happened but it was very rare, unfortunately even on probation.

Both SLC and LAX were former Western Air Lines bases, and I'm very lucky to have flown with a bunch of former WAL CAs. Almost 100% were a total class act. Great aviators, great CAs, wonderful to fly with, what I'd call "world class guys".

Fortunately the example they set has carried over to the next generation of CAs.

In regards to Captains buying beer and/or dinner, keep in mind that many of today's Captains started off as Flight Engineers.

As an FO, I pay my own way. But when I was in the back seat, I virtually never paid for beer or meals. It was almost embarrassing, but much appreciated.

I think it is a matter of degree. Buy the probationary folks everything, buy the beer for the narrowbody FOs below 5-6 years seniority, Int'l buy the first round.

At least thats been more or less my observation.

Rolling thunder techniques
 
All right guys I've been getting used right up to the guarantee for March and April and I figured why not try to get the thunder rolling next month. I was hoping guys could throw out the finer points on how this works.

More specifically I am an ATL M88B with the first 5 days off in the month. Should I bid my golden days at the beginning or the end of the month? When I yellow slip (or put in qualifiers to fly on my X days) how should that look? If I don't get a trip in those first 5 days is it basically futile to keep trying?

And finally how do things like MLOA or sick leave affect my thunder?

I agree and have done the same up until the last year(divorce court ordered 50% paycut:mad:). That hopefully ends soon and back to buying the first 4. If anymore than that it's the FOs turn:D

I gave up on Firefox. Had the same prob and spent hours researching and downloading and deleting files. Screw it since safari works with icrew now.

It's been my observation that these types of stereotypes are way over rated. IMO, the overwhelming majority of our fellow DAL pilots are mature, thoughtful, professionals regardless of what base they happen to fly out of.

Newbie Line question, if you have vacation and your max p/up says 41(because line only worth 47), can you actually pick up that much time?(FAR's and all that satisfied) With getting paid your 21hrs of vacation?
