Sure would be nice to wait until the bird was in hand, but I'm thinking I should commit prior. Four months between retirement and terminal leave is a long time.
Run through vMPF Retirements function, and you'll see that the first step is to "verify retirement eligibility." You'll also see a note that it can take some time to process that request (I think it's 4-6 weeks).

I also believe that your 120-day clock to the start of terminal leave/PTDY begins when you fire off the request to check retirement eligibility, not when you actually request retirement. Make sure this is still true (it was last year), but you can shoot that eligibility request right now and it will lock in a retirement date. Then, if you get the nod, you can adjust fire as necessary based on your expected class date. If you don't get hired, or the class date is further away, you can just not apply for retirement or request a new eligibility date further down the pike.

A couple months ago, the word was that the interviews would be for early 2014 classes. I don't know if the lower COMAIR or furlough returnees has changed that or not.

And of course, your mileage may vary, caveat emptor, and all that. I was only as smart on the retirement queep as I needed to be, and not a neuron smarter.

Had a guy in our unit get hired by a major. He was offered a class date 4+ months prior to retire with approx 90 days leave on the books. He was able to go to class on leave, finish training and work days back at the unit when not on with his new job. He was able to stretch 90 days of leave to accept a class date over 4 months prior to retire. Make sure you think outside the box.

We had a guy in my new hire class who tried to pull something like that, except he didn't notify anyone at his Guard Unit that he was going to ATL for a month of training!

Seems he didn't have quite enough leave!

He had got out of active duty 2 years early and into the Guard on a Palace Chase 2yr. F4 instructor gig. But a few months into it, Delta called and he came to ATL, while still supposed to be full time IP at the Guard! Of course once word got home of his real where-abouts, he was nearly fired from BOTH jobs!

His D/O was going to show him AWOL and have him arrested! He had to leave class for a couple days, fly back to his Unit, beg for his life, and then he came back to ATL and finished up with us.

I don't know what kind of tap dancing he did for his boss, but he did manage to keep both jobs.

Our guy was up front with both jobs, had approval from both ends. Things often work out great when you are upfront and honest, wow, what a philosophy.

I heard the opposite-internals help get the interview and they don't matter at all from that point on.

Humboldt,

Sometimes, as a mil commander or DO, you just have to do what's right for the "good guys", let's the chips fall where they may. I've got several scars for defending guys that were standup guys and deserved a "break" for their futures. The guys that scream and rant, then move on, you still get to look in the mirror.

Anyone know the % hired in 2007/08/2010? I think I remember hearing about a 35% interview/selection rate.

Dude, you got the invite, it's your job to lose now. I'd expect a class date offer of two months or so after your interview. Did you ask the point of contact for hiring what they expected regarding separation paperwork?
