Hi all, been lurking for awhile now, this is my first post. I have had a Delta application in for a couple of months now (I am not available to work until a couple months from now as well). I feel I am qualified to enter Delta directly from military service, but could use some help figuring out what to do until if/when I get an interview.

Some info about me: Mil IP/EP, 3800+ TT, 2500+ Turbine PIC, Only 450 multi-engine turbine, rest is single engine PC-12.

Assuming I don't get a Delta interview for 6-12 months after separating from USAF, what can I do to make myself more attractive to them? Would working for a regional make it better or worse? Are there regionals or some other kind of flying I could do that does not carry a commitment? I'd hate to get locked in to a regional for 2-3 years and get the call from Delta 1 month after starting that commitment. I have enough savings to sit around for 6+ months unemployed, but that probably doesn't look good either. Thanks in advance.

Been waiting for delta to call since 2000. Was told any day now then 911 happened. Now me and many of my coworkers that slaved away for dlcx and even ones that went overseas etc are invisible. Those called these days definitely are lucky for sure. You have no idea...

Are you saying I should take a regional job ASAP, or saying that a regional job might make me invisible after a couple of years? Or are you talking to someone else?

If I am not interviewed after 12 months of waiting I will obviously take whatever job I can get - even if it is not flying related. Delta is where I want to be, however.

I'd definitely consider a 121 regional. You get to stay current, check the 121 box, and there is generally no commitment. In some cases you might not earn the full signing bonus for leaving early, but you won't care if you're leaving for a Major.

Thank you for the advice. Any recommendations for 121 regionals?

If I go with Compass, Delta wouldn't interview me until I reached my flow opportunity (2-3 years), right? So maybe not that one if I am looking to get hired by Delta sooner rather than later? Or am I completely misunderstanding what flow is?

Well, the Compass flow is ending in the near future and is not available for new-hires. Endeavor has a streamlined interview process but it is unclear if that will be available to new-hires either. The SSP hires go to Delta in seniority order, so if they extend/modify the program in the future that could be a consideration. Beyond that I'd suggest looking for a regional with a domicile where you want to live or that is easy to commute to. Domiciles for each regional are listed here on Airline Pilot Central. Just about everyone is hiring like crazy and offering signing bonuses and other incentives.

Aside from Compass and Endeavor, Delta has historically hired a good number of pilots from ExpressJet (ASA). However, that airline is stagnant while others are seeing ridiculous seniority movement and short upgrade times. The fast movement places are currently Compass, PSA, Trans States, Mesa, and the like. These things tend to change however, so again I'd focus on domiciles/commutability and pay/benefits. I'd steer clear of Republic as everyone I know there is pretty miserable. YMMV.

Why does it need to be a regional? How about Atlas, Kalitta, Jet Blue??? Maintain some kind of "normal" income. And gain better experience. Atlas is what helped get me hired at Delta

Don't go anywhere with a flow. Go to a republic or something like that. Had a friend go to PSA and was unable to get hired at AA due to a flow... Now
Your down to two legacys

This could be dangerous advice to anyone without military experience. The flows are taking up half of newhire classes, particularly at AA. That leaves only 50% of a class open to people off the street, most of which will be filled by pilots with a military background, secondary degree, family ties, gender or ethnic qualifiers, etc. I know the circumstances for Delta are slightly different because the flow doesn't take up quite as much of each class, but the result is mostly the same. Just my opinion, but the path to AA and Delta are much harder unless you work at a flow carrier or have extensive qualifications.
