Question for everyone and I hope I am putting it in the right thread. I have finally converted my paper log book to electronic and I am ready to submit my Airline Apps for Delta. I am going to the NGPA expo at the end of the month. I was just wondering what to expect when you meet with the airlines? Do you just have your resume and review it during your session? Is it like an interview or more Q and A? I just haven't been to one of these before and I was wondering what to expect.

I went to OBAP last year and I really enjoyed my experience at the Delta booth. They had some high top tables setup and you'll talk with a Delta pilot one-on-one. All you'll need to take is your resume and they'll ask you a few questions. Everyone was super friendly to talk to, they're just trying to get to know you. Very informal but treat it like an interview. Good luck.

 

I can only speak to OBAP in 2014, but I recommend having a individualized resume for each airline with whom you are speaking. e.g. "Objective: Career pilot opportunity at Delta Air Lines!" (note Delta makes Air Lines two words). Plus have a few more 'generic' ones just in case you run across someone unexpected. Almost everyone was in their interview suit. The one guy who wasn't really stuck out like a sore thumb - not good.

They will take your resume, and review it with you / mark it up, then probably ask you a few questions about it/you. Then give you a chance to ask any questions of them. Have a few genuine things you want to know at the ready, but make it good. Delta was pretty low key, as was FedEx. UPS didn't take resumes. The United Captain spent more time trying to convince me to come to United, rather than ask me anything - but that might have been just him. Pretty much everyone was low-key except American. They did a mini-interview, complete with a short TMAAT. Expect maybe 10 minutes of their time. Have your game face on, and take advantage of the other guys/gals you will be standing around with - meaning talk to them and network a little. If you have time, and they have any social events after hours, supposedly that's where the real money is made... Don't make a fool of yourself and get sloppy drunk on the free booze.

Once they are done, they will stick your resume in a big pile with everyone else's, telling you that you get an extra point on your application score for showing up. I'm honestly not sure how much the job fair really helped me get hired at Delta, but if nothing else, it gives you a chance to practice some, and get a few questions answered.

I was planning on having a resume for each airline, but the general ones are a great idea as well. Now I just need to make sure I hand the right one out! Sounds like business attire is a given but wanted to make sure that I didn't need to practice some interview type scenarios.

It has been pretty crazy getting everything they require on the Airline Apps but I am excited to finally be able to get some face time with them.

It's a waste of money to go to those fairs. United, AA, and Delta all said at Women in Aviation last year "being here doesn't do anything to get hired, no one in recruiting even knows you're here. You get NO additional points for being here!" I was very disappointed to hear that, BUT, I did find the presentations informative (direction of company, future, hiring info, etc.)
They are great for the LCCs. They will interview from those who go to fairs.

Basically, they just go over your resume and tell how it looks. They also tell you a bit about what they are looking for and how competitive you may or may not be. United said, If you are a ROCKSTAR, you might get an extra point, but I think he meant NASA shuttle pilot, volunteer firefighter, war-hero, and you had to save his life sometime during the fair.....

But yes, if you go, dress in a suit and have each resume tailored to Delta and set your expectations LOW.

 

Generals are good because you might be bored and think...Hmm Frontier/Allegiant/Kalitta/(insert other airline here) has no line....eh, why not

 

Once again, you can't network enough, you just don't know who you might run into. I knew a guy who regularly called Delta on the day class started to see if everybody showed up. (Not recommended). One day they had a no-show, in he went.

 

I dunno. They might just be "saying that." Everyone at my company that went to one or two of these were ALL hired at Delta/AA/UAL etc. The ones that blindly applied are still flying rubber dog slop outta HK like me.

 

Has anyone interviewed, or been invited for an interview with DL lately?
