I agree, although the extent of that regret is yet to be determined.

Small CapEx benefits in the near-medium term, so all of that (plus way more) money can be diverted to the incinerator of buybacks and bonuses, could end up being "tomorrow guy's" Waterloo.

It was not an FAA certification issue and the third pilot wasn't really a flight engineer. The DC-9 started out below the threshold and then stretched above it, allowing airlines to bring up "you operated this same aircraft just fine with fewer passengers, why does it suddenly need a third crew member." Some airlines agreeing to operate the 737 with fewer crewmembers put additional pressure on those that still require the third crewmember and Boeing and the airlines won that battle. The 737 is a horrible example to use regarding aircraft certification and the DC-10 was actually certified for a flight engineer (making them required by the FAA as opposed to a union contract).

My personal conspiracy theory is that was one of the reasons the 737 jumpseat was made like it is, to make the aircraft as unfriendly to a third crewmember as possible.

Just the third crew member?

Its not exactly luxury accommodations for the other two poor souls doomed to endlessly suffer the wrath of Boeing. I guess if you like it loud and cramped its OK. Whats really cool is that you have the option to both move your seat aft and also recline it - just not both at the same time. Total bonus - if your shorter than 5'6" you can even stand up - hows that for a highfalutin cockpit.

The 737 flight deck is a major fail all around. Displays are nice, GPS NAV is tight, but as far as ergonomics - fugheddabout it.

Oh yeah on a 700 model we also have the hurricane simulator option when both re-circulation fans are on.

But we do have 787s and our passengers fly on them all the time. They are just on someone else’s certificate.

Just one of the many job hazards.

Where is the light switch?
Which way to the bathroom?
Do I turn left or right to get to the elevator?
