Question for the APC brain trust, dare I call it that.
I am a pilot with about 1700 total time. Been flying a variety of corporate and other 91 jobs the last several years. Prior to becoming a pilot I was employed in a non-pilot role at a now-defunct regional, as well as a legacy carrier. I'm no expert but I've been paying attention.
Atlanta is the most convenient crew base for me. Any other crew base would be a commute.
I've seen and heard from pilots across the board say living in base (i.e., not commuting) beats everything. Lots of doom and gloom in here, much like there has been for the past 10 years at any other regional that wasn't top of the mountain. A lot of it, arguably bogus, a lot of it arguably well founded.
If location is really the big thing, why shouldn't I come here? In spite of all the problems, why should I?
Would really appreciate some answers beyond "ship is sinking get off".
Thanks for your time.

Don’t come here for ATL. It is shrinking drastically as DL takes on more and more regional flying with the 717 as well as Skywest moving in. We’re down from 51 700/900 in February to 14 in August. Bottom FO line holder is July 21 and increasing and there hasn’t been anyone awarded ATL 900 CA in 2022. The focus for Endeavor is NYC.

They already said that there not going to do anything. The plan is to shrink the airline and distribute the flying elsewhere and if it bleeds out, so be it. Unfortunately the writing is on the wall with this one. Comair had 19 year fos on property before they closed up. Don’t be that guy! If you come it would equate to career suicide.

All newhires are going to NYC or CVG for the foreseeable future, but seniority in DTW isn't bad. He should be able to get DTW before too long.
That said, management has indicated that we might shrink by as much as 30-35% company wide over the next 2 to 3 years, so who knows what that's going to look like...

and ATL 200. All the ATL 200 pilots will move to ATL 900 and push junior pilots to NYC. My prediction is 18-24 months or more for a new hire to get out of NYC if we shrink to 12 - 200s that someone posted earlier this week.

For all of you about to get honked on commutes gone wrong, remember, pay protection starts when you notify scheduling you are at the airport.
You show at 1201pm. The first commute flight was full, and your second flight left 2 hrs late. You land at 101pm and you see your flight taxiing out without you. Call scheduling, notify them you are there, your protection starts up on the next leg. I dont know what your schedules look like now but in the old days that often meant you'd only lose a few hours.
I might be making this up so check with the union guys and your contract.

Must be set pretty chill if that combination of circumstances is hot enough to be called hell. Prior to Covid nyc was by far the easiest commute for many, we didn’t have commuter hotels then either. There were some decent enough crashpads if you asked around a bit, the key is finding a pilot-only place. No other city in the system can get you hot and decently priced food delivered for relatively cheap at midnight when your delayed commute finally makes it in. It’s not better than driving, but it’s one of the most commutable bases even with the irops.
