Folks have been struggling with the various HSI modes "colors" for different approach types during IPT which if not caught will trickle down to sim. Part of it I think comes from not having a comprehensive understanding as to the legality regarding the various colors and why they are specifically used for certain approaches. If that becomes fuzzy then knowing which vertical mode one needs to be in during an approach becomes even more confusing. Trying for pure rote memorization on the above opens the door quite wide for error. Add in the auto throttles and why SPDe vs SPDt and the mess gets large. I was lucky and had fantastic instructors that did a good job breaking it down.

I have also heard there have been issues with hand flown SE ILSs.

Know the colors, vertical modes, auto throttle modes and the nuances as to why you would use the various modes and you will be in good shape.

Isn't that the point of being random? If you knew about it last I checked that wasn't random!

Yes but it's only a refusal if you say no

Well, we are desperate for instructors. What else is expected?

Luckily I had excellent initial Cadre instructors.

Probably because they have 48 year olds flying that video game panel of the 175. It's a lot to process.

Exactly. It's not a refusal until they tell you about it.

OK, can someone help this dummy figure out what aircraft to bid for? I was hoping for DFW and now if it's closing up I just don't know what to think.

I'll be classing up at the end of the month, my family is in SoCal and will be staying there. So I was planning to commute to DFW.

I have a brother in Chicago I can stay with, I guess... but LGA seems like a long-haul to commute coast-to-coast to. I was mainly looking at location, as to me... a jet is a jet. but with DFW gone, and Chicago being about as far from SoCal as LGA is...

Can anyone break down why people are choosing which aircraft? Or is everyone just playing the game by: "Aiming to fly the new shiny toy"? Since my plan for DFW looks slim now, may as well try and figure out which aircraft to shoot for that maybe eventually works out of the LAX base if it re-opens as rumored (rumored, though not relied upon).

Thanks for helping the newbie, guys.

You do realize that the flight time between LAX and ORD vs JFK is only one extra hour. You have to bus over to LGA still but it's not the end of the world.

If your #1 priority is location then I'd bid 145. You can easily transfer to DFW even if it's not offered as an option in class.
You are 100% right. A jet is a jet is a jet. They all fly the same. When the mission is different it can matter to your QOL, but, between a 145, 175, and CRJ. There's really not much difference.
