You do not choose prior to starting if that is what you are asking.
Aircraft and base is chosen in class, based on what is available, in seniority order. Seniority is based on age within your class. So if you are "more experienced" you have a better chance of getting what you want.

No it isn't. A lot of the nicer areas are all wrong side of the tracks now. Safe expensive areas are now no longer safe. When I lived in Wicker Park it was fine. Expensive nice area Full of professionals with little kids in the park. Now there is shootings in the street now right in front of my old building, the park is overrun with drug addicts after dark and constant crime in the area. It took all of 5 minutes visiting the area a few months ago to see the change. My friends still live there and can't get out fast enough. I'm sure some areas and the suburbs are fine but the urban areas have gone way downhill.
I didn't say its the worst in America. I said it's turning into a crime zone. Which it is.

Living in NY is expensive. On your budget you are probably looking at renting a room with roommates. I have done this through Craig'slist in the past or try and get together with other new hires. Renting a room should be about $600-700. Look into areas around queens or forest hills to be near LGA. Astoria is a fun area. You can take bus or uber to work. Don't require a car living in the city. You can save there. Crash pads run around 250-300 around NY.

There's some massive advantages to NY. It's going insanely junior. It's always been a much much much social and fun base vs Ord vs DFW (Ord is flat out miserable, introvert delight). LGA also is more removed from the company, you don't feel like your being watched 24/7, no crew tracker, you can see interesting things out the window, and actually go-to cities your friends out west have heard of. Also most captains by year's end will be 08-11 hires, you'll be flying majority of the time with someone your age, not your Dad's. If you want big city life you need roommates NYC is insane but there's some good places in Brooklyn or Astoria that are hip. If your out doors, country, go north or west about 60-80 min and it goes very rural, with ski areas, hiking, lakes, sstate parks etc. Our call out is 3 hours on reserve. A 1 bedroom an hour away us closer to 900-1000 a two bedroom 1100-1200. What is your lifestyle?

I am planning to work my ass off but I like staying active, being outside.i think somewhere between 5-700 is a good number for me to spend on rent. Sharing an apartment with someone would be ideal I guess for that budget. What do you think ? Or crashpad may be. How is living in a crash pad like ?
