Yeah, I lived there too right by the Damen stop and friends still live there. In about 5 seconds of searching found all the links below that go along with what they are telling me on the phone all the time about another shooting. This is overblown? Glad I don't live there anymore. People getting shot in the street right out in front of your home and robbed all the time is not normal. Use to be a great area.

You'll have to decide between NYC and the big city life which is slightly more expensive. And going a little outside the city where you can get a lot more for less. CT/NJ/Long island offer some very good spots.

You can save by going out of town. Nothing like living in the Burroughs though. You will have fun living there. Lots of young people and social activity for your time off.
