QOL sucks IMO principally because there's no stability in being a contract lift provider. Sure one might get senior and get decent schedules, but whose to say your domicile (or your airline) will be here 1/2/5 years down the road?

i get what you're saying, but that's the danger with anything. pan am anyone? they ran the world for years. then they were gone just like that. i jumpseated on a united flight the other day, where the captain was ex-pan am. he said his career path was created by satan. he worked his way up in pan am, then he had to start over at 42 years old. got on at united, at the bottom, and worked his way up again, and of course we know what's happened over there, and they've been barely hanging on too. it's realistic it could happen to him again. and of course mainline airlines close domiciles too. so it's not all just regionals.

That's exactly right. In perspective, not only to other regular jobs but even by major, corp, fractional standards, they are horrible. Someone I know at a fractional laughs when I tell him I flew 85+ hours because he gets paid about 6 times what I make and flys less than half of what I fly. In the grand scheme of things they are very very crap.

As a charter pilot I can assure you that not all jobs outside the airlines are better. They may pay more (mine certainly doesn't) but you are way more at risk of getting fired for standing up for safety items. Just as the airlines have their good bad and horrible places to work there are just as many, if not more, in the private jet sector.

I thought I hit the jackpot getting a part 135 job after my furlough at XJT but now I can't wait to get back.

Yeah, those really sweet fractional/corporate are extremely difficult to come by....if someone told me I could choose between XJT, Flight Options, or Avantair, it wouldn't be a tough choice. No offense to those guys at all, I'm just not a 7 on 7 off kind of person. I like having union protection and a good contract. I know a couple guys flying charter at different places. They may fly less, get paid more, but they have like 2 hard days off a month, the rest of the time they're attached to their cell phone.....waiting.

The only way somebody at a fractional is making 6x more than a regional airline pilot is if the regional guy is an FO and the frax guy is a 5+ year captain at Flex, NJA or CShares.

I enjoyed working at AWAC, and I enjoy my 91 gig even better...but not everybody would feel the same way.

A job is a job is a job - a means to a paycheck. As long as you enjoy what you're doing, to hell with everybody else...and if you don't, then maybe its time to pursue a different path.

Yea that's true, the union thing is definitely an issue for them. However, for their type of flying, the pilots are the faces of the company. They actually need to keep the pilots happy. Fractionals are more like airline schedules, vs charter. It depends on what you want, there are people on the other side of the fence that can't even imagine flying as a "bus driver" for the airlines with no good benefits.
