Made the switch to Purple years ago after a few months on the line at UAL and have ZERO regrets. I must admit, I live in domicile which makes the job that much easier, but keep in mind there is probably no better place too be as a commuter than here. Our system form combined with our ability to buy tickets with company money to the outstations make for a stress-free life commuting to/from your domicile or outstations when deadheading is involved.

It’s not completely stress free but certainly a lot better than commuting without the benefit of buying your own deadhead tickets.

True statement. It’s all relative though. While UAL has protections in place if you didn’t make it in, it was a seniority rules kinda place for the jumpseat if I remember correctly, so you were never really safe until takeoff. And heaven forbid you had to rely on a 50-seater to get to work.

Reviving this for some advice. I did it over in UA's thread, but I figured I can get some more FX people to chime in over here, considering historically most have left other carriers to go to FX.
I have a CJO at both. I'm 30, so my seniority will be great at either in the long run. I currently live in DEN, and I'd probably never leave this domicile. I wouldn't move to MEM, but if I find the right partner one day, I'd definitely consider CGN and HKG.
No idea how taxing 35 years of night flying at FedEx would be. That's really my biggest concern. It looks like United is going to be a very fast upgrade soon, and wide bodies will go to junior FO's if that's really a consideration. All seats of all planes at both airlines are trending downward consistently. Historically, it seems like a no brainer for FedEx, but times are unprecedented at United. If a massive downturn happens within the next 10 years, I'd still be okay at United. Based on what I can see on APC retirements, I'd be 27% at UAL and 38% at FX in 2036 accounting for zero expansion at both. With expansion it seems I could be top 20% at UA with 20 years left (APC only goes to 2036 for FX). I like to think either option is going to provide a great income for a family at some point in my life. The number one thing I care about is quality time off and pay. I'm hoping to have a happy family at some point. I won't be one to chase the dough. If i'm doing my math right, i'll probably retire top 100 at FX and top couple hundred at UA.
There are so many retirements at passenger airlines that it seems like a different animal compared to the past. Unprecedented. The unlucky generation of being at a pax carrier for 10 years and only having 400 below them doesn't seem comparable. I'll have 400+ below me in a few months starting at UA. It seems I'm at the beginning of a wave for UA, and maybe the middle for FX? The end of my career would be stellar FX with being able to start so young though.
What's the thoughts on living in base at United vs. commuting at FedEx?

I was at United for about a year before
coming to FedEx 4 years ago, FYI. Been happy here. Commuter the whole time.

Currently 8 months at UAL. Commuter. Late 20's, will retire top 20. Single, no kids. Just received and invite to interview with FDX. Live in mountain west, neither FDX nor UAL have a base here.
Pros at FDX are the ease of commuting with reserved JS. Larger % of widebody flying. For the the most part, they don't have a dog in the ME3 fight or other joint venture type flying loss. And finally, mission oriented style flying. No pax, terminal bag drag, FAs, TSA, etc. Pension + 8% D.C. Hard line bidding with conflict.
Cons are easily the night flying, the possibility of autonomous airliners in the future, Amazon style threats, as well as a potentially changing trade climate. Longer commute.
UAL has been great, but the volitility of the pax airline industry can be worrisome at times. Joint ventures, ME3 threats, etc. Also, when you're flying larger widebody equipment, you're essentially flying all nighters as well. RJ's, more 175's, etc.
I'll commute forever for both. This is one of my single biggest concerns.
Thoughts? UAL/FDX were my top choices if that even matters.

My understanding is Fedex scope clause is not as tight as it should be. Having said that, and unless it gets out of hand (up to the Fedex pilots to decide just how much they want to fight), still the best aviation job. Period.
