Looks like the last CGN award was in April, would this be because no one is bidding for it or because it's closed to NH right now?

Still some slots in CGN that need to be filled by new-hires, so it comes and goes, just depends on what's going on in training.

Got it, thanks. CGN is the dream right now. What is the timeline on getting assigned to CGN if it's not available in training or does it vary too widely to say?

All dependent on the next System Bid. No guarantee when it'll come out or how long it would take for you to get your training date.

Last year’s system bid only filled EUR57F to 55% which implies a total staffing level of around 90. There are 65 active bidders and several in ITU or awaiting training. Based on what I can tell they will still need to send some more new hires over there to get to the staffing level shown on the system bid, however the training letter does not currently show any dates for that seat. Doesn’t mean they can’t add them at any time though.

Based on our idiotic and arbitrary training and bidding system, it could potentially be years before you are able to transfer over if you don’t get it in training. Bid awards don’t mean anything until the company decides they do. There are 757 FOs who were awarded widebody positions in December 2020 who still have no idea when they will train out despite new hires getting those seats immediately.

I see quite a few HKG pilots transitioning to CGN over the next few months going into next year. I’d venture to guess it would be a long shot to get in as a newhire. Sorry.

Default CGN

So to clarify. If you are not awarded CGN as a new hire but you bid the 57 MEM will you be able to base transfer over to CGN on the next system bid? Or will you be required to wait until everyone senior to you who is on different equipment and requires training?

Even if you were awarded a wide body, a FDA (CGN or in the past HKG) assignment waives that two year seat lock. So if during the next system bid you were senior enough to be awarded CGN (the last two bids didn’t fill to max staffing so any seniority could have held CGN), you could go. The 767 fleet is a transition course which is much shorter than if you had any other wide body which would require a full ITU. 757 would just be a base transfer. Hope that helps.

Once awarded CGN from a system bid, you’d get there quickest from MEM 75. Any other aircraft would require you to bid for training and there’s really not a great way to guess timeframes on when people bid for training.

Really helpful info, now to just get my resume to a point to where I'm a competitive applicant. Easy, right?

Thanks again for the info, hopefully I'll be there soon!

KPG3 You are wrong about waiting to bid FDA until the kids are our of the house. I was an expat pilot for 22 years and I do not know of one child who did not love the experience and most were disappointed when their time overseas was up. Kids minds are sponges to be filled and they learned the language much faster than the parents. My girls are fluent in Japanese and still remember a lot of their Arabic. I took them on layovers and they have been all over Europe, skied in Switzerland, visited the Taj Mahal , the Agra Red Fort, camped n the Saudi desert where we met Bedouins and they rode and drank camel milk from the udder, and many more experiences than I can mention here. So if you reluctant to bid a FDA because of the kids you are making big mistake.
