Mississippi has a graduated tax rate. These rates are the same for individuals and businesses. There is no tax schedule for Mississippi income taxes.
The graduated income tax rate is:
0% on the first $1,000 of taxable income.
3% on the next $4,000 of taxable income.
4% on the next $5,000 of taxable income.
5% on all taxable income over $10,000.
If filing a combined return (both spouses work), each spouse can calculate their tax liability separately and add the results.
Also, as many have mentioned, sales tax is lower than TN (7% vs 9.25% for Memphis) and property taxes are much lower. I moved from the Memphis suburb of Cordova where I had a 2300sf house to a 4300sf house south of Olive Branch, MS, and my property taxes went down a couple hundred bucks.

Unusual personal situation reporting in:
Been an FDA guy my entire career here, starting with Subic as a new hire.
No wife. No kids I’m bringing back, etc
Where would you rent for a year (going to 777 FO with 30% or better seniority) while you figure out life in the US and where to buy a house and commute for real from?
Looked downtown for the character. Found a good loft with a garage. I cc but also got the impression I’d actually NEED to cc (a first for me) walking home, which didn’t seem cool.
Coilliervile seemed soulless, antiseptic and devoid of anything even resembling character but the apartment was nice and had a pool that I think would have MILFs in the summer
If you had to rent a close to turn key place from the Peabody to Buffalo Wild Winds in base housing for a year... what would you do????????
(Edit: i stress rent because tho ive heard Oxford is nice, why give MS close to 1000 a month in state income taxes vs TN taking 0)

Mid-town is artsy fartsy area. A lot of Subarus and Memphis Flyer stands in Midtown. A lot of good bars but also random petty crime. Smashed car windows etc.
If you are on older side and into MILFS a Memphis Raquet club membership is in order and East Memphis is your area. This is where all rich private school families live. This is OLD money memphis. Lots of good bars and restaurants but not a lot of rentals.
GT is home to lots of families but also ends up with a lot of divorces (see apc link below).
Cordova has TONS of rentals and tons of low end dates and drama.
Collierville is just as you described.

Well Downtown is generally where single (never married) ppl live but they are on young side. Downtown also has a lot of empty nesters. Downtown has all Tourist stuff. Grizzlies, Redbirds, Concerts, tons of bars/restaurants.

The Judgmental map made me laugh! I believe it is spot on from my observations of the area...We are also considering moving to Memphis once our last kid leaves the nest in August. I've been with FedEx for ten plus years and have had a crashpad in G-town and South Haven, plus have friends in many of the other places listed. If I was starting over again with kids, I'd probably do East Memphis and stick my kids in private school...
Being empty nesters, we're not looking for a McMansion but need room for guests and a yard. Don't need land and the wife likes to be close to stuff. Was hoping to stay under $500k, but it appears that many of the desirable areas are well above that, including downtown lofts which is surprising. Not sure where we'll end up, so please keep the "advice" coming.

The Mall of Memphis, located along American Way (north of Hickory Ridge Mall, and just south of the I-240 loop) contained an indoor ice-skating rink. It closed in 2003, and was demolished in 2004.
You're correct about Raleigh-Springs Mall ("dead mall"). When I was in high school, it was brand new and was the best thing since sliced bread. The theater had TWO, count 'em TWO screens!!! It was the best of modern, and folks came from far and wide just to marvel at Raleigh Springs, "the Mid-South's most exciting mall."
Guess where it was located. Yepp, unincorporated Shelby County, Memphis reserve.
Now they've erased all signs of a mall, built a couple of small lakes, and are building a community center / police precinct / library called Raleigh Town Center. Oh, it'll have a skate park, too.

I think "The mall where you will get kilked" refers to Hickory Ridge Mall, which is still open. It once was in unincorporated Shelby County, then along came Memphis.
