I don't know what airplane you're flying now or have flown before. My personal experience is that the 727's and the Classic (100 & 200 series) 747's were VERY noisy. One of the first things I noticed flying at FedEx was how QUIET the DC-10 cockpit was, the MD-11 cockpit is even quieter.

Basically, I've flown the MD-11 my entire FedEx career. I don't ever remember flying with anybody that had their own headset. You probably won't need to have yours repaired unless you want to.

Spend your time worrying about important stuff like getting hired (I highly recommend Emerald Coast Consulting if you haven't been hired yet, finding a crash pad, airport car). You'll have lots of time to worry about headsets later ...

MaydayMark...thanks for the reply. I've been on the -400 and -8 for the past 3 years. I was hired last week which started me thinking about not getting it fixed if I didn't need it.

As for the crash pad and car. That's something I thought I'd start looking into when I get a class date. I'll stay with family during INDOC and try to find those things at that time. Of course if you you have any suggestions I'm all ears.

If you are hired into the MD they start you a day early to get around seniority.
Is it safe to assume that if you are typed in the MD-11, have worldwide experience in the MD-11, and you are hired that you will be sent to the MD-11?

Most likely so since they hire people specifically for the MD-11, but not guaranteed either.... You'll know if you were hired for the MD before you start Indoc...

Do you think it helps you get the interview?

The reason I ask is because I'm a prior military guy that flew MD-11's for an ACMI operator for a short period after I got out of the AF and before I went to work for Southwest. My total time is really low and my multi time isn't that high either so I wasn't even eligible to apply for Fed Ex when I got out of the Air Force. What do you think my chances are now?

Total Time: 2835
TPIC: 1533
Multi Turbine: 1658
Multi Turbine PIC: 555
MD-11: 460

*Times have NO sortie conversation factor added.

I think it helps, but honestly, it's really difficult to tell what it takes to get an interview. Good news is that we are hiring a lot of people now. Your flight time seems competitive to me. Instructor/evaluator time seems to be helpful, but again, it's hard to tell. Keep updating your application, it shows interest. Best of luck!

If you aren't working with Emerald Coast or someone like them, you are making a huge mistake. All the little boxes to check to get the points, what organizations to join, all the minutiae that it takes to get the call, is even more important when you are on the lower end of the flight time scale.

Thanks to everyone who is taking the time to answer questions on this thread - it is very informative.

What would the path look like (if you're fortunate enough to land the job offer!) for someone who wanted to Plan A: Be based in IND, or Plan B: Live in IND and commute. I know it's 767 only, but was curious how long it would take to get there if you wanted it.

Also, I may be overlooking it, but I can't find any threads/info on what new classes are getting to choose from base and equipment-wise, like you see in some of the other major forums.

Thanks!

You could be assigned anywhere. It Depends on the needs of FedEx when you start. Our most recent new hire class had seats on every airplane type we have, all in MEM. There was one ANC MD-11 FO.
