Great explanations! I never really understood the new deviation policy.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to help me out. Seems every trip is a new learning experience.

Raptor, Adlerdriver, Kronan you all put the pieces of the pie together.

Called scheduling because I already booked the replacement ticket for the second leg and did not want to cancel ground transportation by accident when deviating. Scheduling called GT and here is what I did. Went to the deviation page and just checked the first leg from MEM to deviate. Kept second leg and ground transportation. This should cancel first set of tickets and keep ground transportation upon arrival. Trip check in as usual for deviation and final check in when at gate for DH leg to gain protection back.

Sounds like a good plan and everything worked as advertised. Let us know how the DH gate check option works as that is something I think few of us have ops-checked yet.

However, you have to book a new ticket for the leg you're actually taking, right? Because the deviation on the first leg should cancel the entire ticket, if I understand this correctly.

Correct. It's not possible to selectively cancel legs on an existing ticket to/from MEM. So, front end, you need to re-book which always runs the risk of price difference or non-availability. You'd think cancelling the scheduled ticket would free up that seat for re-purchase but you obviously have to commit to deviating to see if that's the case.

Back end (if pricing or ticket availability were an issue with the deviation ticket), I suppose one could not deviate, use the first leg of the scheduled ticket to their city (no checked bags), tell the company and the airline plans have changed upon arrival and go home.

It worked seamless. When doing final checkin online the verbiage had something about within 100 miles OR joining a portion of company schedules DH (can not remember exact wording). Final checkin was accepted and ground transportation was still booked.

It probably doesn't affect the domestic guys so much, but for the international deviators, if you have a two leg deadhead with an intervening layover (MEM-DFW (layover) DFW-CDG) you can deviate on the first leg and the second will not cancel since its a different day, different ticket.

Follow up question from the outside. Have you had much luck earning frequent flyer miles through deviations? Reasonable expected amount? Lastly, when you buy a ticket is it bought on your credit card then reimbursed? My family got very use to flight benefits from the 121 world. Thank you again for all the explanations.
