Line bidding is going the way of the dodo bird. In my opinion PBS is better anyway (with the right protections). I hope your union negotiates this correctly and has the required built in protections to prevent unstacking and other nefarious things that would be a detriment to the pilot group. Frontier’s union seems strong, and I’m quite sure they’ll make certain you get the proper gains in return for PBS. I’ve been watching closely from a regional hoping you guys get the contract you’ve fought hard for. I won’t make a move towards Frontier until you get it. Hope it’s soon.

The rest of the "concessions" with PBS lie in the work rules, things like unstacking, who has control, and in our case most importantly how vacation affects bidding. Vacation bidding is one of the very few work rules that F9 has that is truly industry leading or at the very least near the top. Thus these are the areas where PBS may or may not be a concession depending on how the rules supporting it are written, but based on past experiences with Indigo we would lead to believe they would not be as good as what we currently have.

PBS is not the issue, but the language and rules that comes with it. I would be more focus on what PBS will do with vacation or training events. Would it add trips around vacation, or can you create a conflict because PBS doesn't look at your vacation. Where you can take 1 week and turn it into 2 weeks off like line bidding. This goes for training events too. If you're worried about the lack of open time with PBS, why not negotiate for a percentage of open time, so it creates less lines (if that's what you're worried about). PBS is not the end of the world but it can be great if it comes with great language and rules. This is why PBS is different from one airline and another.

The people here feel it is concessionary because its primary purpose is to reduce the amount of open time and thus in their minds reduces schedule flexibility. What they don't realize is that it reduces open time by giving more people lines who would otherwise be on reserve with line bidding, and because you don't have to bid a line invariably will have trips on it that you don't want and instead are bidding for trips you do want and complete your line with it you don't need the same amount of flexibility because you are getting more or less what you want from the initial bid.

This is a gross oversimplification. For those with lower seniority, our current system allows a person to greatly enhance or even completely change a crappy award. Those with lower seniority under PBS will see a dramatic decrease in QOL with PBS as compared to now. Unless, there are some amazing language provisions, that frankly I can't imagine Indigo would agree to, and if they did, they won't abide by. Ready to greave and fly?
