I read the CBA a while back during a break in training and then focused on finishing sims so I’ve forgotten a lot, and soon I’ll get back into studying particular sections like reserve. I just want to make sure I understand it and the nuances back to front.
Short call reserves do not have days “off” in the traditional sense. You have a “latest release” depending on which short call you bid for. …But I’ll leave that for another rant about our contract and reserve rules…

The limit of extensions are just that, extensions. If you have, say, 6 days RSD and scheduling assigns you a 2 day trip you only need to pack for 3 days as they CANNOT send you for a 4th night. When you call in to get released after the two day they can ONLY send you to an overnight. One single overnight.

Just don’t want the new guys to have the “you’re mine for 6 days” mindset when they’re on reserve.

Not true, that one overnight limitation is based on you being assigned out of order upon return to domicile. If you are next available in the bucket on your RI(A/B/C/D/E) and match days available then it is not a reserve extension but rather a reserve assignment.

Read the first sentence of 25.R.4
A new assignment may be given outside normal order under the following conditions.

Yes, however this requires you be released to RI(x) then reassigned by FIFO we cetera. The infinitesimally small likelihood of that happening isn’t lost here BUT I’m drawing attention to 25.R.4.a. In the 4 years of this contract I have yet to be given a NEW assignment and have been “extended” probably a dozen times after a previous extension. I just tell them 25.R.4.a and go on about my day.

Let’s add this situation to the list of things that need to change in our next contract.

Gary et al is correct on this. Yes, it happens. If I had 5 days of availability and they called me out for an early low block hour turn, I’d definitely show up packed and ready to go for additional days. If they’re short staffed enough to give a 1 day trip with 5 days of availability, there’s a chance they’d need to keep the reserve guy going. It’s not an “extension” unless it’s out of the FIFO and bucket system order of assignment.

Yes. Something to add to the list of things to address in the next contract.

What do others have and what’s the fix? Those are protections for reserve extensions that I’d be willing to bet is an ability most if not all have. The last thought after the comma in 25.R.4.e. Should be removed but it’s the only downside I see.
