Interesting read. The Mohawk was my grandad's, he used it to take A LOT of deer, antelop and coyotes on the farm. He gave it to me as my first hunting rifle and I've also taken deer, antelope, coyotes, even an elk with it. (though .243 is pretty small for that size game, shot placement counts! I'll use my 30-06 for that role now) Its a GREAT little rifle. Its going to be my project for 2011. I plan on refinishing the stock, maybe a re-blue and probably a new scope (fixed 4x for wide ange view, all you need) for it also. Its accurate and very easy to lug around. Perfect scout rifle. That is one gun that will surely stay in the family.

BTW. The Remington 700 in the middle needs a new scope too.. that one HAS to go! The rifle was a gift to my father in law, who passed it on to me (its hardly been shot) and its got a Tasco Euro Class scope, apparently it was a much higher quality scope than what they're known for now but I don't like the large objective lens. The .264 shoots amazingly flat and its a heavy rifle so I'm thinking it will be a great long distance coyote gun but I'm thinking a Leupold 3x9 will do just fine.

 

I see that you have an early model Series 70 from the large rollmark, was that an electroless nickel you had bead blasted or did you have a hard chrome done to it? I don't think they had stainless until the Series 80 came along. Looks NICE!

 

Thanks, built two of these with original factory '70 series electroless nickel slides, Caspian stainless frames and Ed Brown barrel and small parts. It was fun, but I don't plan on any more builds. Too much time and mostly happy with box stock.

Anyone know much about the Century FN-Fal's? They are put together using surplus parts.

 

The FAL is one of the best rifles ever built, but if it has Century stamped on it the quality control is generally poor. The parts that are surplus are usually fine, but the craftmanship in assembly may be lacking.
Your best bet on a FAL is DSA, they manufacture their own receivers and bought both the original technical/engineering package and a huge quantity of original parts. Luck plays no part in getting a good rifle from DSA.
