The DL MD88 CA who denied my buddy the jumpseat. Reply: "Son if you are going to be a smarta** you can find another ride." The FO did the whole mime a gun in his mouth schtick after this exchange. That's going to be a loooong 4 day.
If you think we are beyond having anyone ask for a jumpseat that is not legal to ride the jumpseat you're greatly mistaken. An unauthorized jumpseater is a very big deal. What the DAL Captain did is what every Captain whether it's a 747, CRJ700 or 1900C shall do with a jumpseater if the guy is asking to ride in the cockpit. How else do you know if they're a crewmember? Hell, common sense says you approach that cockpit with your ID, pilot certificate, medical and pass in hand and out in front of you so that they don't have to ask for it. It's what I did as an RJ pilot traveling on mainline and as a mainline pilot traveling on an RJ. If you don't want to do that buy a seat in the back. |
Tool of the Day 5/18/2013
TSA agent A***** Sheehan who gave me - a crewmember in uniform going through TSA in order to go to work a random patdown in Harrisburg today. Thanks for making aviation safe... eh |

I must fly with the more trusting variety of DAL Captain. No more than once or twice has a CA asked for any more creds than the 1P Jumpseat card and a Crew ID.

Trusting is a good word for it. Still doesn't justify it though. It only takes once to ruin it for everyone. And it only takes a couple seconds to check. Why wouldn't someone check? |
Bottom line for the DL Captain, is, what does his FOM say about JSers? Does it say he needs to confirm that information or what.

Sounds like paranoia to me. CASS, or company employee verification, is a pretty good reason why guys don't check. You can forge a pilot certificate and a medical, but you'd have a tough time hacking the CASS database and having your face pop up on a gate agents screen. I'd rather fly with a paranoid gate agent.
Its bush league for a JS rider not to at least have those two simple things at least readily presentable. Takes 10 seconds, max. The stakes are far too high and the rewards of acting cool and casual about it just way too low IMHO. It takes 10 seconds and we're required to do it anyway. Where exactly is the incentive to blow it off? |

There was an example recently that flat out proves that getting a CASS ticket printed out is not enough to stop the threat. Not going to post it here, but look around internally if you need proof.

I have my certificate an medical out every time even if I get a seat in the back. Not having it ready is what's really toolish

Don't they cover this topic during Basic Indoc any more? Isn't their a jump seat information sheet distributed to new hires? |
