What would exclude the A220s from being used inter-island? I don't know enough about them to know why they would be a poor choice other than the PW-GTF short comings for the low and quick routes and the mx.

I think that’s is why it’s a poor choice. All of the new engines don’t react well to short cruise and high cycle counts.

There is no SEA-HND on JAL. While HND is the better airport for Tokyo O&D traffic, who knows what percentage of AS's pax are doing that. With OneWorld, the goal may be to connect throughout Asia. In fact, today out of SEA you have DAL and ANA serving HND. But JAL and soon HAL go to NRT.

It was designed for long, thin routes. The exact opposite of inter-island ops.

It's kind of a unique niche market, unlikely that airframers will really build an optimal plane for that... anywhere else in the world, people drive or take a train for distances like that. Or a ferry where there's water involved.

From an engine perspective, turboprops are obviously mo betta.

Other than 73s and the A320 family, is there a small narrowbody airframe that has enough cargo capacity to haul all the free checked bags?

I said that a few posts up.

But when they actually build them anymore, they're optimized for regional short-haul and don't have room for cargo other than checked bags.

I don't think anyone other other than ATR (or maybe RU/PRC) even makes them anymore. I don't think they'd bring on a new fleet just to do the same thing the 175 can do.

If you really wanted to get creative you could bring back the 737 Combi... take pax and plenty of cargo that way. I think AS got rid of them due to regulatory issues with pax + cargo? Maybe MAX7 Combi? Still not great for engine wear though.

Aloha used operate 737 pax birds as freighters at night. Normally four at night. Conversion was quick about 20 minutes.
Seats went back in in the morning.
They also had a couple of 300 or 400 series with doors as ell, except they had crack issiues due to the aftermarket cargo door installations.
