I got out of the military in late 91.... things were just turning bad.... got hired at AE with 1700 total time in jets and turboprops..... got the ATR-42..... I was low time guy in my class. spent three years 50 from the bottom of the seniority list before I left for a better paying job. Loved the flying.... but the pay crippled me. 92-94.... those were some lean years in aviation.

Hi!
Got out of the military in late '91 with about 1700 total, 1000 helo and the rest ME jet.
Went out and got my ATP-MEL at Southeastern Flight Academy in Macon, GA. An ASA senior captain/check airman gave me my ATP checkride, and said he'd put a good word in at ASA for me.
Didn't fly for 10 years.

It's bad for all parts of the work force this time, not just pilots. I think that is a bit different from after 9/11 for sure. I can't even get a local hourly job so far. Apparently no one wants to hire an experienced, responsible, professional with a college degree, even to stock shelves! That whole bit recently about people "dumbing down" their applications just to get a chance at a job, I believe it.
But as I sit here watching Rick Sanchez on CNN translate the Mexican TV broadcast of the ongoing hijacking, I realize that I need to be thankful every day for what I do have, not stressed about what I don't have.
BTW, I'm one of those 6k+ guys looking for a CFI job or anything for that matter.

That is the truth, I have been on the street since janurary and have lost count of the interviews I've had that start with are you subject to recall. Then we have the 200+ apps I never heard a word on, I had a HR person tell me once (she made it clear she would deny it if I said anything) that when they see you qualify for more than the jobs are paying they will not hire you because they know when things turn around you will jump ship for higher pay, so yes it is possible to be TOO QUALIFIED...it sux
I learned real quick to have 2 resumes. One for aviation related jobs and one for my "B" job that doesn't mention anything about aviation. I only put "Bachelor of Science" for college, not "BS in Aerospace Administration". I had one employer who I had worked for a while ask me what my BS was in, and after I told him he said he probably would have never hired me if he had known that- "it sound like you should be working for NASA or something!" I can't tell you how many resumes I sent off into the BLACKHOLE always wondering why I didn't get a call for at least an interview. The word "Aviation" is the kiss of death for regular working jobs!

It really sucks out there for qualified pilots. I recently hired a Falcon 20 crew for one of my airplanes. I had 10K+ hours GV, Global Express, BBJ guys beging for work. But management looks at these guys they say the same thing "as soon as the economy turns around these guys will go back to flying their big corporate airplanes with there big corporate paychecks". There are jobs out there in corporate world but you have to be typed, have time and be 135 current. On a good note, it has gotten noticably better from six months ago. I have heard some rumors of airlines starting to hire againg mid to late 2010 but mostly to replace the 65+ pilots. Good Luck!!
