FAA hiring Airspace System Inspection Pilot
#191
I spent the better part of the past decade trying to get on with them. Spoke with current Flight Check pilots, with the head of my regional office, even the main guy in OKC. Applied to every opening at every location as it came up.
Every time I received a note saying due to my lack of total points, my application package was not even referred to the people who evaluate prospective candidates. My background is civilian/airline flying only.
I did speak with one current Flight Check guy who was all airline as well but got furloughed and spent a brief period of time working for the TSA, which apparently was enough to get his foot in the Federal door so that might be an option.
USMC - you've been really great sharing information about this position and doing all you can to get guys on. I really appreciate it. Would have loved to have spent the rest of my career flying with you guys.

The good news is...I have some preference points so maybe it will be less competitive for you!

This is one of those times when we need the "barf" smiley on APC. But you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd probably look at NTSB and FAA before TSA though, they both hire civilian pilots and it's not so competitive that you need massive vet points.

1) Flight Check (to include the recent VFE hires)
2) Technical Center
3) Hangar 6 (our 'corporate' guys)
4) ASIs
I'll agree with rickair as far as the ASIs hiring civilian pilots without massive vet points. It is a way to get your foot in the door for other opportunities and as mentioned in the other thread lately, Flight Check as hired a few former ASIs the last go-around. As for the other 3 FAA flying positions, I have not seen anyone hired into those jobs without the requirements outlined in the other thread and above - either 10 pts preference OR transfer from within Federal service.

Thanks Golden. I do just try to 'pay it forward' on here. This forum was very useful to me in both educating me about the industry and networking. I wish there was more that we could do to help you aboard. Anyone who is willing to put in that much effort would be a welcomed addition I'm sure. I appreciate the support.
Now let's make sure that we are all talking off the same data points here. As far as I know - there seem to be 4 groups of *pilots* for the FAA.

Yes, I knew he was talking about the smurfs. TSA (the regional airline) wouldn't get you preferential federal hiring.

More than likely getting mothballed
Victim of the budget cuts. It been moved in and out of the hangar recently on a regular basis, but I can't remember the last time it flew.
Yes - I'm OKC based. Been here just over 2 years so still very new. I promise you that if you read the old thread (even starting from the latest and going backwards) most if not all of your questions concerning the job will be answered. there are probably at least 5 other threads out there that are much shorter but still hold the answer to some of your questions.
I figured you did just wanted to make sure there weren't any misperceptions floating around out there.

Heard rumor control this week that the 601s will continue to work Europe and the Pacific (to include the USAF Combat Flight Inspection), the -604 will eventually work Alaska, and the -605s will start working on all of the new NAS flight inspection and eventually phasing out the L60s by 2017. Standby for changes to that timeline
I wish they were white - but they are that God-awful Robin Egg blue in color; but we'd rather say gray for the macho factor!
Yes - a lot of work get done at Wiley, both real inspections and training work obviously because of its vicinity; along with Clinton-Sherman and Ardmore.
