True to a point, but largely wishful thinking in light of a full or near full pullout....

I have no doubt that "contracting" will increase as troops decrease. The news doesn't care or report that "company X is paid xxx to do xxx job in the peace keeping effort". All they care about is "all of the troops are out of the zone" contractors don't count.

Its not the news I am talking about, its Karzai and Company. If patch wearing Special Forces are getting kicked out, what happens to contractors? How about the "new Afghan judicial system" when a contractor engages bad guys. Etc issues

If we go, Karzai goes. If Karzai goes, there will be no "peace keeping effort". Simple as that....wishful thinking to believe it'll be only contractors over there after we leave. Some? Perhaps. More? Definitely not.

If the US military goes I for one wouldn't do contract flying over there. No way in hell I'm trusting my life to an Afghan standing security to the base I'm living on....

There will never be a scarcity of bad actors in the world, so while there may be some shuffling of resources, the contractor pilot world will not shrink much if at all.

I could very well be wrong, but I don't see any signs of an increase in the current combat zones.

I'm not talking about truck mechanics. I'm talking about pilots, planes and mechanics. The general public would be surprised where we have people. Without going into a lot here I can guarantee you we even have spec ops guys places in a "training and monitoring" roll. Even though there are no "combat" troops. It's all about wording for our elected officials to save face.

I was just using the mechanics as an example. I understand the combat troops vs support troops. But regardless of the name of them, if there were 100,000, and now there is 20,000 they will not need the service and products supplied by contract aviation companies. I think its more about total numbers of armed forces, than their role. I can tell you that programs are being shut down right now. A relatively large program just got their contract pulled in preparation for the drawdown. I hope that I am wrong, (for my sake, and all the other deployed pilots out there) but there are already shutdowns, and signs of more.
