Affirmative action in the airlines?

Actually, I was the top dog in my class! Since my repertoire on this forum is humility, among other things, I have never told anyone.

That's only because I was not in your class.
While I would agree that SOME minorities hold the view Coulditbe has described, I can't help but notice that he failed to mention those that would discount and disregard others simply by sight. They let their bias cloud their judgement and don't give some people a chance because they "KNOW" they could never do it. Are they not just as bad? They say stuff like "Wow, he speaks so well!" Considering english is his first language, is that really so surprising?
What you have are two extremes that are equally troublesome. Neither is acceptable. Somewhere in the middle is a solution. Now, how do we get there? On a Airbus 380 perhaps.................

Do Jet,
United admitted to making mistakes. I'm not saying that they didn't do some crazy hiring practices to correct past wrongs. If you look back to one of my earlier posts I stated how some Employers past over well
qualified minorities year after year only to hire a lessor qualified minority in response to a law suit or an EEOC complaint. In a fair world, there never would have been a law suit or EEOC complaint for a minority to get a job. Oh, and for the record, I know plenty of none-minorities that were hired with no PIC. If you look back at another post of mine, Fed Ex didn't even require it. I tossed boxes with several non-minorities that didn't have college degrees or PIC and that is FACT. I've met college interns that were hired with no PIC. Non-minorities of course. Yes, United admitted to making mistakes. I'm fully aware of this and people like you do their part to keep it in the public eye. Well done.

I am going to raise the bullsh1t flag here. The only person I have known to get hired at FedEx without any PIC was a woman. And that was because the HR folks made the CP hire her or they were going to take over the hiring. Plain and simple. The only break the internals used to get was the education and the PIC was reduced. But that isn't even the case anymore. Now they have to meet the same minimum requirements. And they're guaranteed an interview, not a job.
Raise the flag all you want. I haven't worked at fed in ten years and when I did it was as a box thrower. I'm just telling you how it was back then. You did not have to have a college degree or pic. If you worked the hub for one year at fedex you were guaranteed an interview. I threw boxes with several guys that either had no college degree or no PIC. I don't know what else would make a man come to that hell hole and throw boxes in 100 degree heat, sub-freezing temps, or load a container onto a plane in freezing weather for peanuts. So do your home work and go back a ways. Go WAY back to 1995.
As far as modern day hiring at fed ex I could really give a crap. I've loaded enough planes in freezing rain to know I couldn't work for them ... job security or not. I personally don't give a flying flip what they do. Allow me to retort. I don't know what they do modern day, but back in the day you did NOT have to have a college degree OR PIC.
Peace.

I thought this an interesting topic so I chose this as my first post.
Affrimative Action or Equality in Hiring, the two are not synonomus. What bothers me the most about this topic is basically selfishness. Selfishness on the part of those that think that solely because of their minority status (Black, White, Male, Female, Straight, Gay, whatever) it is an entitlement to preferential treatment. It is unfortunate that our country embraces PREFERENCE as a cultural phenomenon. Simply put it is called GREED. "I want what you have because I am not satisified with what I have."
Time after time I see people use the discrimination card simply because their ego was bruised. People tout that the BEST PERSON should get the job and when they define BEST obviously they are using themselves as the standard to which all are measured. This is where we as a people and sometimes as a country shoot ourselves in the foot.
Am I less of a pilot because I was not in the military? Flew Corporate? Commuters? Army Navy Airforce or Marines? Cargo?
2000 PIC ME CIVILIAN vs 2000 SIC Military SIC? Active vs Guard?
Perception is anything and attitude is everything.
Next time you are in a newhire class, ask yourselves what qualifications you bring to the table and then look around the room and realize you are not the top dog in the class. Think about it!
God Bless

For some food for thought, when I left ASA they were hiring about 15-20% at least female (white).. it was borderline odd to see so many so fast coming thru, of which one was none other than the infamous Kelly Flynn of Airforce scandal fame..
