I've been commuting my whole time at the regionals and once you get a line its a whole new lifestyle. So knowing that some junior people just got MCO 190 FO is good to hear. If I had to commute to JFK or BOS obviously I would because being at a major in and of itself is a huge step up from a regional. So i was just curious what it would be like timeframe wise to get to MCO and be able to drive to work even if it meant being on reserve for years. Reserve in base and being home would be nice until I could hold lines. I just need to dig through some of the threads to see how long it would take to hold a line in BOS or JFK on either equipment now. .Since commuting for lines and reserve are completely different lifestyles. Even FLL since it doesn't seem like a terrible commute out of TPA especially if you could hold it as a new hire. How big of a base is 320 FO in MCO if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you again for responding. I really do appreciate it!
MCO320FO has 117 target active pilots by end of next year. Most junior will be seniority 3770, then 3200s for the next guy. thats 2016 hires.

190 newhires arent sitting reserve long or at all right now in JFK/BOS because there is so much movement right now. Just kinda depends on when you start. If things shut down again right after you start, could be on reserve forever. If hiring plans continue to come to fruition, you’ll likely spend little to no time on reserve in either JFK or BOS on the 190.

Even in the 190 left seat, after this last bid, 2018 - 2019 hires will be CA lineholders in JFK/BOS. Guessing 190CA will continue to go junior for some time, and the right seat will be a revolving door. Probably easy enough to get in the top 50% JFK190FO after a year or so, maybe less, so long as 220/321 growth and associated hiring keeps happening. After the latest email about bookings being down though, I’d caution to keep a bit of skepticism that it all plays out as advertised though. Not out of the covid woods.

Living in Central Florida, another possibility is applying to be a sim instructor or adjunct instructor (part-time line pilot, part-time sim instructor). They hire a fair amount of junior FOs to work in the sim. Unless it’s changed, they want one year on the line before becoming an adjunct.

MCO 320 FO is fat on pilots right now, even with the mild base expansion scheduled for 2022. They're not displacing pilots from the base but they're not allowing backfills to that seat as pilots upgrade or leave either. I wouldn't expect to be able to hold a spot as a MCO 320 FO for several years as a new hire. Forget about MCO 320 CA for 10-15 years unless something causes a massive base expansion. Who knows what the 190 in MCO will look like in a year or two, might disappear entirely, might hang on for training purposes. MCO has been smallest and most senior 320 base for a long time and nothing I've seen gives me reason to think that will change anytime soon. MCO 190 is subject to the 190's fate in general and Covid changed that. Nobody knows anything.

Truth, but many reports from the training center in regards to the working environment aren't positive. That's all I have to say about that.

Perfect thank you again for the response. Hopefully everything continues to be positive. Worst case having to commute up north having a line is still much better than being a regional line holder and at the mercy of those who supply the flying. Thank you for the food for thought. Hopefully the interview process goes well.

It should be noted that most requests to trade out of base are, understandably, out of JFK; some out of BOS, a few out of FLL. Not many, if any, requests to trade TO JFK. And it's not like there are a lot of mutual trades every month. There have been a couple of months, fairly recently, with 40+ requests to trade bases but none had been awarded. Most want to trade out of the northeast. Few want to trade to it.

Can anyone speak to what schedules look like out of BOS for a BOS 190FO or BOS 320FO? Min days off, what trips look like, how long someone might be on reserve first starting out… etc. Would love to hear from anyone who’s on the bottom right now to know what it looks like

I just got class for later this month. What are the chances getting JFK on either airframe?
