Most jetblue pilots qualify for the maximum paid FMLA benefit of over $900/week at least as far as new york state goes. I'm not sure about Massachusetts and California. Even after taking out taxes, that's enough to cover a typical mortgage payment and maybe some groceries too each month of leave. It won't make up for a normal paycheck but it's not insignificant especially in the type of situations that qualify for FMLA.

I think the program got phased in over the past several years and benefits increased each year. I had a month long FMLA recently and made back what I'd paid in total the past few years during my first week.

Ny is now 12 weeks of paid family leave. Max benefit for that (based on income) is over $11k. You can also work part time instead, and drop leave one day at a time. Typically 50 days worth, but I’ve seen as high as 60. Imagine 50-60 guaranteed days off, every holiday, vacation, for a year, and of course as needed childcare/baby bonding. Worth way more than the money they give you.
