Please adhere to jumpseat etiquette
I get it guys. It’s been so hard for the past 5 years from private pilot to 787 FO and you’re heading off to Sydney at 25 years old. But you gotta at least dress the part, and ask if you can get a ride. I mean shoot, even if you’re stuck in the cockpit in an RJ, can you at least wait to start streaming movies until we’re 10,000’?

It’s been a persistent issue for years, although if a certain Instagram post is what triggered this thread that was incredibly egregious and I hope someone pulls that pilot aside and makes it damn clear that jumpseating is a privilege, not a right.

Additionally, mentor the ones that don’t know or don’t follow the rules/etiquette. It’s not just the 25 years olds, it’s the ex-Mil that are commuting for the first time at the airlines that just don’t know what they don’t know, it’s the 25 year seniority guy that always lived in base and finally moved to TVC. We turned away two jumpseaters on the same flight a few months back, neither were fresh to the industry. One had a full on beard and didn’t want to shave, the other was wearing jeans and a t shirt and had no other clothes with him. When I was flying RJ’s I had multiple mainline guys tell me they were taking the jumpseat, no “hey mind if a catch a ride”.

The information for JS protocol is out there. Research it ahead of time. Don’t make your ignorance the captains problem.,

I mean if it were up to me you could ride in shorts and flip flops but I’m not going to stick my neck out and possibly face disciplinary action because someone can’t be bothered to read the details in the ALPA app.
