Default DAL NewHire Questions/Info Needed

OK,

I couldn't find the info anywhere (recent). Can someone shed some light on what to expect as a newbie at DAL.
Do we get a uniform allowance?
What's the current schedule after your first two weeks of indoc?
What does A/C training consist of during the two weeks?
How many days on the road for domestic vs. intl, reserve vs. line holder? What are turns like? - Is it like a SWA 25 min heyday, or can you mosey about the terminal drinking $3.50 lattes?

I got lots of "generic" answers for this stuff, but just looking for some more "realistic" expectations.

This may be a stupid set of questions, but hey, I'll ask them (there has to be AT LEAST 1 other newb thinking about this stuff!?)

Also, recommendations for Flight/Travel bags. Should I wait until I find out what plane I'm going to be on? (I'm assuming my backpack and Samsonite just won't "cut it!" anymore)

Appreicate any and all info everyone provides

Do we get a uniform allowance? No. However Abbots has a new hire package for around $800 that includes hat, blazer, 3 pants, 3 shirts, wings, name tag, and epaulets.
What's the current schedule after your first two weeks of indoc? Depends on a/c. Some get 3-4 days off...some get 3 weeks off.
What does A/C training consist of during the two weeks? No specific a/c training during indoc.
How many days on the road for domestic vs. intl, reserve vs. line holder? As a reserve I get 12 or 13 days off and the time away from base varies month to month.
What are turns like? - Is it like a SWA 25 min heyday, or can you mosey about the terminal drinking $3.50 lattes? I've seen 50 min to 3 hours...just depends.

Nope, DAL does not give money for uniforms. You may be able to get a low interest loan from the DAL credit union.

All Classroom, with pictures the first day. You do get to jump in the pool on one day for survival/ ditching school.
No systems stuff in those two weeks. More FOM, and OPS Specs. You will get your A/C the first day. Pubs a few days after that, and then a training sked. It could be the next week after or indoc or a few weeks later. It depends on FTD and SIM availability.

What does A/C training consist of during the two weeks? See above.

Depends on how short scheduling is. This summer we will probably be short in all categories, so you will fly. You will vary from every reserve day is a fly day to about four days a month. It depends on what base and seat you sit in. This also changes from month to months. With all off the training going on, it is very had to give a best guess because of all of the movement. Either way it is less than you are probably doing now. What are turns like? - Is it like a SWA 25 min heyday, or can you mosey about the terminal drinking $3.50 lattes?
Depends. Some are 40-45 min turns with an a/c swap. Some are for three to four hrs. This varies every for every category. My experience was that the 88 had less sit times. 767 has more.

Flight kit needs to be black. A standard size works for all fleets. I would recommend a Luggage works bag. Metal preferably. It sits right behind you, so it will last for a very long time. The good 27 inch one is about 325.00
Appreciate any and all info everyone provides

I second the Luggage Works/Purdy Neat bag, but if you're a commuter, I would definitely go with the 22" bag. On the 737/757/767, the 22" will fit wheels first into the overhead (I don't know about the 88). The 27" requires you to put the bag in sideways. With overhead space always being at a premium, you might have trouble getting that 27" on board and end up checking it.

I've never had trouble packing for 5 or even 6 days with my 22". It's amazing what you can cram into it. You can also buy an extra small bag that attaches to the main bag for those times where you can't fit everything in. I don't have one and I've never had a need for it.

I will 3rd the recommendation for the 22" vs 27". I can get a few days worth of clothes in the 22", and I think the 27" is overkill. I don't see too many guys with them, and the ones I do see with them always say they wish they got the 22"

I like my 22'' bag because I commute. I bought the matching clip-on duffle bag if I needed more room. Since I am on reserve, I can leave the duffle bag at the crash pad if I don't need it. I use the duffle mostly for when I commute to and from home on a 5-6 day reserve stint.

My shortest turn time has been 40 minutes on the 88. Turns are around 40 min at the outstations and about an hour in ATL to allow for aircraft change. That's still enough time to run to Starbucks and still get your stuff done.

Welcome aboard!

Just wait till you get to training. The flight station, basically a pilot shop, will give you a new hire discount on the bags, flight kit and stuff.

Couple more questions?

If you get the ER (or whatever applies for that matter!)

Does DAL "type" you in training in the traditional sense, or are you SIC "typed"
How long is the FTD/SIM training. Time, hours, etc.
Thanks!
