I find it truly sad that some choose to live like this.
I think anyone who wants no max pick up & open time pick up on vacation is a selfish jerk.
It reminds me of those greedy individuals that will fly extra time with guys on the street. An airline that starts with C & ends with L comes to mind.

While I agree, it is nice to have the option to make some extra money a few times per year. It would be nice if we could fly to the FAR's maybe three or four months out of the year if we needed money to pay for an unexpected expense. Even if you have your stuff in order, expenses still come up. I've been paying part of my sisters mortgage to help them out and now I have a grandparent that is in a nursing home and will most likely be paying for part of that since I'm the "rich" kid in the family. Having the ability to work as much as you can a few months of the year would be nice. Not everyone does it because they are selfish jerks.
I hear that part of the argument. I have been paying a mortgage for the last 18 months for someone that cannot find a job. It is my choice to do that though. My wife and I will also be the couple that is paying for her parents in their retirement as well, again our choice. We are already planning for that one though.
The stuff that guys are picking up is outright trip drops on the swap board or WS/GS that go above max pickup. Remember we have no one on furlough either.
We are definitely red lined this summer. We pilots are loving it, but how many of us are going to love it when we cannot swap trips this fall and or are still flying a lot in the traditionally slow months? What we really are doing is proving that we are willing to fly more.

I 100% agree. Even with a side business and a wife that works we will never buy that "Captain's" house. Why? No need to.
Problem for these guys as they explain it to me is this. Wife did not work onB scale, never has worked, and they got though that. Wife never went to school, met in the military, had kids young, as no job experience, and for the most part could only do hourly work now. Some wives of the guys I have flown with have gone back to school and gotten good jobs, but most have not. Add to this, bought a big house in 2001, kids went to school in 2004-2008, no retirement savings, have 15-20 years left on house note, etc. In effect, they have no option with the housing market where it is but to work their butts off.
Now add, a boat, fast car, second house, and a second wife, girlfriend etc, and these guys are in a corner.
I agree it is not the way to live, but when these guys lost their retirements and then could not sell the large house, they lost options. Yep, I shake my head because I live on less than I make, but it is always a good reminder of where I do not want to be in my mid 50's.

$100,000/year is barely enough to live the American dream these days (I don't even make that). We all need to make more money. We gave way too much back in the bankruptcies. It's time to recoup some of that. The company is making money. Pay me.

I have flown with guys who are pretty open about what they do (if you ask). I did a flight with a guy who came right out and admitted that he did favors for scheduling and he couldn't give a tinkers damn about the 900 guys on furlough.
And he wasn't old and crusty, and he didn't try to justify it with the "I have a pregnant girl-friend, a ex-wife and morgage on the 2nd house".
It takes all kinds. A LOT of these guys fly under the radar. The grunt all the right noises, pay their dues, and go right on doing what they do.
There's no changing their mind, because they will rationalize it every which way they want to make it fit with their world view.

What's with these guys attacking the wives? My wife has a bachelor's degree. She is not working though and probably won't for a long time. I am gone so much due to this job that someone has to take care of our baby. If my wife works, a daycare will be raising our child. On top of that, a pretty big portion of our earnings will be going to daycare anyway.

It is not attacking anyone. It restating what the captain's I am flying with are stating. I agree that some have wives that are well educated. Some can stay at home with the broad, and some can't. It a lot different today for the junior lot than it was a few decades ago.
If you are a WB fo, go pick the brains of your Captain about his home life. Most guys I fly with just offer it. I guess they feel like explaining why they are flying four and five WS with a GS or two a month.

Perhaps 2-3 times a year would be ok. I understand some have certain circumstances, but most just have frivolous lifestyles or are greedy. I can see GSing during the summer, but flying 90+ hours every month is BS.

Some may be frivolous, some may be improvident, some may indeed be greedy, and some may be all of the above and a jerk to boot, but that does not make it wrong.
We have nobody on the street and we are hiring - if guys for whatever reason, use the contract to their benefit, I am OK with that. One mans "greedy" may be another mans "minimum."
Personally I wish guys wouldn't fly extra but, unless we have furloughs, it is a personal choice. Besides a lot of guys are dropping for military and that will help offset the "fly to the FAR limit" crowd. Now just for the record I am 100% against flying extra with any furloughs.
