Southwest 2nd Quarter

$45,851 through the end of July, senior reserve on the 88 on 3rd year pay. I bid down to have weekends off, flew 286 hours and worked 10 days per month on average thus far, normally 2-3 trips a month. Very lazy. Probably the lowest paid guy around.
And I never paid for a type rating. No PFT here.
Luv, you're a good sport.

10 days reserve utilization at MINIMUM 6.5 TFP/day = 65 trips/month, plus approx 5 days/month non-utilization @ 6 TFP/day = 95 trips/month or 95 x $90 x 7 months = $59,850 plus per-diem.
It's not all about the paycheck, just being a good sport.
While we're talking paychecks, I know a SWA captain in MCO that made $39,000 last month...you guys win, your 747 captain made $40,000. I wouldn't do it, I think that the SWA worked something like 25 days. I actually worked 17 days in July.

That's pretty funny right there, I don't care who you are. At 10 days of actual flying with a reserve schedule, you would have made at least $60,000 or $14,000 more over the last 7 months at SWA at 3rd year rates. Man, that type rating would have been $7,000. If you don't mind, I'd like to manage your finances. The only way that you could have made less at SWA is if you would have given away a huge portion of your reserve schedule, but then if that 6 days that it would have taken to get that type rating is too much effort, then maybe you would have actually made the same at SWA.

This is really a legacy forum - there is a huge number of legacy pilots that participate here, and not that many SWA guys. Many think that bad news for SWA would mean success for their own company, and many think that SWA pilots are "smug" about their jobs so they try to demean it at any opportunity.
That's about it.
"Many" does not mean "all" there are a lot of good people that post, but don't expect many well-wishers to post on a thread about SWA profits.

Seriously? You've got to be kidding me?
Herk you need to do some research and understand the series of circumstances of how SWA was able to rapidly grow and become the airline they are today. Even Herb is quoted as saying, "we bet the farm and it paid off." As the others said, SWA's pay is currently industry leading, but it is equivalent to bankruptcy pay rates in the other carriers. No hate, no exaggeration, just the God's honest truth.
People aren't jealous. They're angry with their own situation. I myself, never saw the high pay rates so I don't have those strong feelings. But I do poke fun at SWA because they get the best free advertisement available. Whenever their name is mentioned, you always hear LCC or some other mention of cheap fares. It is a great ad campaign and the media uses those words without hesitation. However, SWA's costs are rising as they mature and will continue to do so (don't even mention the fuel hedges). As of right now, their costs are on par with the other carriers which means they can't undercut like they used to. Make no mistake, SWA was an industry game changer and are they're highly competitve. In fact, their management is soon releasing a new frequent flyer program that is rumored to be "game changing" (their words not mine). So I am very anxious to see what they do.
Honestly, I think it is shameful of people on here bragging about pay. There are people out there starving, homeless, or in worse dire situations. I think it's pretty arrogant. Pot calling the kettle black? Perhaps.
If your destination falls into the 35 states/59 cities in the US only that Southwest serves, they aren't a bad way to go. But if your destination lies in 118 countries or any one of 249 domestic locations, DAL isn't bad either. Chances are we can get you to anyone one of those destinations with only two flights and our fares are just as competitve as that "low cost carrier"!
And if you still don't get it after that, well you can bring the horse to the water ........

But there is two problems here:
a) you're comparing your current pay to our Chapter 11 pay which will change in two years. Go back to 2005 and you're looking at $135/hr for 3rd year 88 FO, $149 for the 737 and the work rules were much better, are you guys no Chapter 11 pay with those "high" rates? and
b) to make SWA 737 wages at SWA (for now more than DAL) would require me to be at SWA, with my only option to fly the same plane to the same 69 destinations until I retire with no option to change gears, if I want. Basically, Delta does what SWA does and more. Guess I never applied for a reason.
You're turn. and fwiw, when I say you're a good sport- I was not being sarcastic. You've bantered back and forth pretty well. I'm still not happy about the slot swap and the SWA PR irritates me, but, you've got a good attitude and in honor of that:

KC-10 - It's the same legacy guys that post repeatedly on any thread that mentions SWA. Go back and review the last 5 threads with SWA in the title - it's the same guys over and over. I can't imagine posting repeatedly or even reading the "latest and greatest at Delta" thread on a regular basis. I'd mention names, but that would probably be in poor taste. Y'all figure it out.
