As it stands now I'll be two-hopping to any domicile unless (until) we move.
A four hour flight to work sucks. Imagine driving 30 minutes to the airport to get to the gate 1 hour prior to departure. Also you need to give yourself more than one flight. So with the above you have wasted 5.5 hours. Chances are you will arrive several hours before your trip starts so you have now spent almost 8 hours of your day and you haven't even started your trip. Now imagine flying 6 hours out to the west coast that day or 4 hours down the Carribean. Keep it simple, move to a base. Commuting sucks...period.

And all of the above is best case scenario being a senior bidder able to hold trips where you can commute on the same day your trip starts/ends. Imagine the above with a 6am start time and a 11:55pm arrival at the last day.

Thank you all for the comments. I'll have to think this over some more.

PotatoChip- Do you commute from Vancouver, WA?

I'm not at JB yet but I've commuted for almost 15 years. Mostly from Dallas to Houston and now FL to IAH. If you can find a city with high frequency from LGB and is :45-1:15 flight, commuting isn't all that bad. I don't know if that exists for JB or LGB, though.

I do not. I have two friends who live there and commute to LA, though both have commuted to the east coast. Just attended a wedding there last month.

If it were me, I second the living in NH.

Also, assuming you're commuting to the east coast, keep in mind the time zone differences. It was a huge difference just moving from the central time zone to the time zone where my base is. I can't imagine what it would be like commuting in from the west coast. At best, you're probably on a red eye. More than likely, you're coming in the day prior. Be better on the commute home, but I don't think I could handle a cross country commute with the time changing. If your show time is 6 pm eastern, with a 4 hour flight, you're looking at a 12-1 pm EST departure at the latest. So, that's 9-10 am on the west coast (assuming I didn't jack the math up). So, at the gate about 8-9 am for a 6 pm show? No thanks.

Question on the reserve bidding. The month prior, when you bid, you tell PBS what days you prefer reserve and the length. right?

At the same time can you request AM versus PM reserve?

For Monthly Reserve bidding you can basically request certain days off, and/or a pattern of schedule like 4on/3off type of thing.

Bidding for AM/PM slots happens the day before your RSV day. The next day assignments are posted each day at noon. I wouldn't count on having a lot of control with the AM/PM bidding. It has been 50/50 in my experience, and I am usually one of the more senior guys bidding RSV.

Default Boston Commuters?

Do you all have parking available or do you take the Logan Express? Anyone coming from southern new england via commuter rail to south station and then the silver line?

On a separate note, any guesses on upgrade for new hires in 2015?

Can't help you on the parking thing.
Looking back over the last 3 years of posts, upgrades have been about 3.5 - 5 years. Also, during that time a bunch of people on apc kept saying the upgrade was going to be wayyy longer. I would imagine if JB gets the 40 airbuses that are on order, they will have to continue hiring, and the upgrade time will stay low........just my guesstimate
