Yeah its a simulator/ground school instructor position. Im not going for the position myself. We were having this debate in our crashpad, so we decided to start a poll.

Since most airlines don't even had a TPIC requirement I doubt it will be seen as absolutely necessary once hiring/retirments kick in. FedEx and SWA are the only airlines with a hard TPIC minimum. JetBlue, VX, Spirit are currently hiring people with 0 TPIC and many with less than 1000. Delta and United didn't have TPIC requirements and hired people without 1000 TPIC and more than likely will take many without it when hiring resumes.

Just my thoughts.

UPS is also 1000 TPIC.

A more important question, do you really want to eliminate the companies that require it and limit yourself to the companies that don't?

Additionally, if you get furloughed from a company that doesn't require it and you don't have the 1000, you will have limited opportunities finding a new job.

I think it's a matter of opinion really. Some guys have zero desire to fly cargo (me included) so seeing UPS and FedEx as not an option isn't really a big deal.

I think with the upcoming retirements and movement at the majors, it doesn't make much sense unless someone really wanted to go to SWA. I think most guys will jump on the first airline that calls regardless of their total amount of TPIC.

Again, just my opinion.

For here and now in this environment, there is NOTHING magical about 1000 TPIC. All it does is allow one to fill out certain applications.
At 999.9 hours, you can't apply for the job. At 1000 hours, you can. Everything else stacks the deck in your favor, but without that perhaps-not-magical-but-absolutely-necessary number, you need not inquire.

True, one man's trash in another man's treasure, different strokes for different folks, etc etc etc.

But the REALITY of this career, even before 9/11 was DON'T put all your eggs in one basket application wise. There are plenty of guys that say UPS/FX weren't their first choice, but they have not too many reservations about being there now vs. the legacy that never called and they would have been furloughed from, OR being there after being furloughed from a legacy, etc.

Out of curiosity, why not?

I ask because I've have seen 20 year US; 8-10 year AA, NWA, UAL and DAL pilots go to UPS. Not saying its great, but I never got 5 weeks off (minus 2 for training) without vacation, or had 4 day RONs in HNL, SYD, HKG, CGN prior.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I have a 2-5 hour butt, so anything pushing a transcon and I get the itch to jump out. 12-14 hour overnights are perfect. Get in, sleep, get out and get done (ie. SWA, jetBlue, etc). I've been all over the world in the military and I can continue traveling on my off time.

I'm sure the above flying is easily attainable at the cargo companies, but it's just pure personal preference.

I have a buddy at SWA that says the same thing. I don't fully get it.

Cargo-- limited exposure to TSA, no douchey passengers. Need the Lav? No negotiating with an FA to take a leak, tired? I go hop in a bunk, Hungry? I go back and fix myself something to eat. Get off the plane in a different country...
