Not exactly. They hire the people that interviewed well, conformed to their targeted selection, and think they will be a good fit for their company.
Hence the reason for a broad range of backgrounds.
From a 20+ year retired mil IP/EP/Standeval/NATOPS safety person all the way down to the 2000 hour RJ pilot that was well connected enough to get an interview and whatever lies in between.
Experiences simply get one to the interview. AFTER that, it's on the candidate to sell themselves.

Thats true. But getting to the interview for most regional pilots is extremely difficult. We are already doing the job with the paint on the side of the plane and carrying "majors" passengers. But then suddenly we arent good enough to actually fly the "majors" plane.
Ita a joke.

It's simply a matter of making oneself stand out in that tallest silo of candidates.

The answer to that is obvious but does necessarily determine who Delta decides to interview. I know it is frustrating not to get "the call" based on having more "hours". My point is Delta selects someone to interview based on a lot of different parameters, not just flight hours.

Understand your frustration, but what you're saying simply ISN'T true. The issue is that that when they cull from a broad range of application silos, the RJ pilots are the TALLEST silo.

Sorry if i have no simpathy for them or care to hear the explanation while our first year FO's are literally eating food out of the RJs because they have no money.
But i hear what youre saying. I think as time goes by and more ex regional pilots get into more powerful positions we might see a shift.
Most of us will never forget the regional years. And seeing $600 paychecks flying a jet. (Makes it hard to be cordial with any mainline)

They all may uses a different process, but they're ALL using a broad range of backgrounds.

Been through a furlough, multiple displacements and a shutdown.
And although your username has a ring that's sadly been a mantra of this career, GET OVER THAT MANTRA.
Start making YOURSELF standout.
And as far as seeing "regional pilots get into more powerful positions", I'm not so sure that would be true. HR has MORE control now than EVER, doesn't matter which airline.
We're long past the point were "pilots hire pilots". SURE, pilots still have a say. But not nearly as much as they used to.

I agree. My only knowledge of the hiring process is for Delta.

While you may think you can pop enough chaff in an interview so they don't notice that attitude, that's an automatic thumbs down if they get a sniff of that. Every airline, all day, every day. Maybe you're good enough to pull it off, but most aren't. Most interviews you'll be sitting across the table with well over half a century of experience looking specifically for that attitude.
I highly suggest that if you want to move on to a mainline…any mainline…or even most so called LCC's even, that you let go of that angst and focus on the optimistic sides of the opportunities ahead, for your sake. YMMV.
