If there's something about your record that reduces the score, I've heard two things...one that it goes back to the big stack, and another told me they thought it stays in the short stack until your score is good enough to warrant a call. The only ones who go into the trash are the ones who fail the panel interview, otherwise there's always hope.

I know a few guys that interviewed who never received the "Update you app" email. The email definitely means they're looking at you, but isn't a requisite to receiving an interview invitation (at least that's what I'm telling myself).
