Man.. You guys just don't get it. Nobody's sitting in the corner with hurt feelings here. I see all of you continue to ignore my point that the captain's actions were more immature than his FO's. Nobody is making excuses for the FO's behavior. Contrary to what you all seem to think, this career isn't a western starring John Wayne and directed by Ronald Reagan. If you want to take fictional examples of lesson teaching and apply them to the cockpit, then by all means, be my guest. Just don't expect those actions to be effective, or to gain the respect of your fellow aviators in the process. Think less John Wayne and more Barney Fife. If you can't see the problem with the way this captain chose to handle this particular situation, then I can't help you. Please feel free to now ignore all of my extremely valid points and make some comment about how I'm a young whiney whipper snapper who needs to drink his milk and eat cookies in the corner.

But both Vagabonds are lucky enough to call the PNW home! Vagabond, would you PM me with instructions on how to change my user name? I feel bad choosing one so similar to yours.

Just read this thread. I hear ya, a stern, "can you put that away until we set the brakes, thank you" would have sufficed.

Very unprofessional what he did.

He could have turned the plane around went back to the gate bumped the FO off for willfully violating the FAR's and FOM. I guess he's stealing personal property if the FO decides to open a beer while taxing and he takes it and pours it out window. Your all assumeing that ignoring the violation after it ceased is the only acceptable and professional thing to do.

Interesting thread. The justifications of the younger, faster, connected, (at least in their own mind) generation are absolutely absurd.

I have had a number of times that I have had to tell FO's to "Stow it and do your job". This is accomplished in such a manner that the offending party would not dare pull the device out again at the inappropriate time.

As to captjns actions; would the little weenies like it if he would have taken the true morale and professional high ground and just write up the perpetrators multiple times - like for EVERY infraction and make sure that they either have disciplinary action from management or are outright FIRED! That ought to fix yer wagon! So, maybe suffering the indignity of being treated like the child that you are, would be a preferred alternative. Think about that.

Though I see the captjns method as being extreme, and possibly having further CRM ramifications, I certainly understand the reasoning. It comes under the Captain's discretion on handling CRM/discipline issues.

Should anyone actually have to address this issue? Everyone should be professional enough to have their phones stowed and in "airplane mode" just as all the self-loading cargo in the back are supposed to be in compliance.

There should be ZERO tolerance of this issue.

There is just flat out no excuses for all of this, period! The reality is that this issue is so cut and dried that we shouldn't even be discussing it.

DO NOT USE YOU CELL PHONE (for communication) IN THE AIRCRAFT AT INAPPROPRIATE TIMES!

What's so hard to understand about that?

WelcomeToBen; my extremely valid points
Not even close, go back to playing in the sandbox, err I mean with your Nintendo. I would have to think twice about even letting you ride in the jumpseat.

So lets say that Captjn takes the phone away for the entire day like he claims. What about between flight, such as in the middle of a turn. I can't call my wife and kids? I found out my wife went into labor in the middle of a trip/day when I turned my phone on at an out station. If my phone was confiscated I would never know.

Hahaha.. So predictable. This conversation has run it's course. You guys just want to insert your own narrative into what I'm saying. I never once made an excuse for the FO's behavior. I'll let you guys get back to story time now.

So if the captain whips out a newspaper during cruise I should just go ahead and snatch it out of his hands and throw it in the trash, two can play this game. Or we can be adults and communicate with each other and set the tone what is acceptable and what is not.

In what world is it acceptable to escalate the situation like he did before even talking to the fella.

Talk to the fella? The pilot group as a whole has trivialized using a phone off the gate. It has become an error that needs to be corrected not willfull disregard for the rules. The fact that a chat is what's expected is the problem. If the captain is reading the news paper while your trying to get the flight on time then snatch it.
