Always solutions to situations… Face Time anniversary party from half way round the world was the next best thing. Fellow crewmembers in the hotel’s conference room, friends and family at the house. I had Apple TV at home, as did the hotel conference room. So… yeah… we were apart but together too.

Yea, for a number of years I used to skype my kids from the crew room and read to them before bedtime. It's possible to be still present and involved, but it takes effort.
And shifting gears a little, but still one for the road warriors:

Back in the day, while on a 64 hour layover, I was called out to cover a trip for a captain who became ill. I mobilized and made it to the airport. Made it to the front of the line of security. A moaner, as he boarded the aircraft ask, “What makes all of you so special?” Well sir, we are bound for an airport a mandated curfew airport. If we arrive late, well off to our alternate. I told him that our hotel at the alternate is about 5 minutes from the terminal. So I asked “Where is your car parked, or family gonna retrieve you”? No reply.

I can't imagine the generation before pagers when you had to sit close to a telephone. Not a land line. They were all land lines. And when you left on a trip, you were gone.
