Hiring wave vs. the degree requirement
#121
Fixed it for ya. HR (a bunch of people with degrees hiring someone to make more than they do) is hiring someone to work for their company for 20+ years and spend half that time in middle management (Captain). Half their candidates are also competing against Military Officers with Masters Degrees. Meet the BASIC level of education or get left behind.

A similar requirement was Air Force officers and the Master's degree. Although it is not written anywhere it was a known "requirement" that in order to make Major in the active Air Force you had to have a Master's degree. We can argue until the cows come home about whether it was necessary to be a good field grade officer (and I'm sure there were occasional exceptions) you were making a mistake if you thought you would be part of the "exception". Stop trying to find reasons to avoid getting the degree (if you really want to fly for the legacies) and just GET IT.

The folks interviewing me knew everything I had in my application/resume. I doubt it was what my degrees were in that moved me up, as you said computer sorting. However, folks who were asking me questions knew what I had studied. I did appreciate that they took the time and effort to study me a bit after I spent a bit of time prepping.

But the fact remains that from sociology, to political science, to dentistry, to law, to literature...., the list goes on and on of people getting hired with degrees that are as unrelated to this career as the people doing the hiring are to line operations....!
It has all become an HR stupidity of looking at your socks and if you have hair sticking out of your ears, and the logical thought process of hiring an aviator has been replaced with looking for the right set of characteristics that will give a pencil pusher the warm fussy feeling that this particular person will fit the "Company Culture" in other words..., the people most likely to be in love with the brand..., or better yet, the set of characteristics that will vote "yes" to whatever nonsense the brands puts in front of them!
That is the real reason as why the other thread titled "Who is still waiting for the call" Is filled of guys with 10,000 hours, check airman, aeronautical science degrees and tons of letters of recommendation hearing crickets while you constantly hear about the 3,500 hour art majors getting hired....!
That sir..., is the reality of airline hiring today
