If you MUST have a "big name" degree...

Community college for the first two years. Transfer, and meet the minimum "in residence" credits for the "name" school.

Hint: Your degree will look exactly the same as someone's who did the full deal. Just like your ticket from "Bob & Harriet's Flying School & Pool Supply Emporium" Part 61 school flying a 15,000 hour 150 looks the same as those from "Super Big Name Flight Academy" Part 141 school flying a brand new 172SP with GWhizbang.

Your tax money pays for CCs...might as well use it.

No degree has always put people at the back of the hiring waves since airlines were a thing. Ironically, it's those on the back side that most often need a degree to fall back upon.

Don't let the outliers fool you.

Just get that degree. Yes, they are pointless in many cases hinging upon what the major is, and how much has been retained by the student, but in the long run they are a certified stamp that one *may* have some capability of critical thinking (even though we all know that there are many morons with degrees), and that is all that counts to hiring departments. For the record, the individual is what truly counts, and not the degree. My father did not even pass high school in Europe, but had the cognitive acumen so that he could open several restaurants throughout this life.

I love the fact that ALPA backed the degree requirement that several majors have. Just happens to match what the military requires.

I'm currently in a bit of a pickle deciding on my next move to make myself a more desirable and qualified applicant. Unfortunately when I started flying, I had enough saved to either finish my flight ratings or go to college.

My current situation allows for one of two options. Stay debt free, keep plugging away at my regional job flying 90 hours with 12 days off in month. Volunteer my time on days off to causes that could genuinely use a helping hand; be productive and offer some real help.

Option two- take out student loans to finish an online degree in my free time. Would wind up digging myself a $25,000 hole and take about 3 years to wrap up. I'm ok with that if it would put me in a position to be hired by a company that pays better than a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle.

I talk with guys in the jumpseat that say 5 years from now, the big three will be hiring guys without a degree on a regular basis. I'm looking for your opinions because I don't want to look back and say 'I should have started the degree years ago because now I'm stuck here' or 'I should have never taken out the loans and done the degree because it wasn't even needed.'
Have a good friend who got confortable corporate flying and bet on not having to get his degree. Few years later good corporate gig was lost due to merger and 4 year degrees required. Last We talked he finally found another good corporate job after having to fly a baron for a year. He should have just worked slowly on a four year college degree.

The op should try to get a job at one of the second tier airlines like Allegiant, Alaska, spirit, virgin...etc and work on the degree while he's building better quality time.

This is SO simple folks. No degree, minuscule chance of working for a major airline. Period.
