Sounds like those who went to college 15 to 30 years ago don't have a current clue of how expensive college is today.
If you qualify for financial aid, it is because you are just getting by financially, and taking on any additional debt doesn't appeal to anyone in that situation.
If you don't qualify for financial aid, it is because you make descent money according to the financial aid qualification guidelines, so be prepared to fork out anywhere from $100 to $500 or more PER CREDIT hour!
A Bachelors Degree typically requires 120 credit hours , so do the math..

The argument that people pose when they ask if a degree is a necessity, is not because they are typically trying to avoid doing the work required to obtain it.
My experience in talking to a few guys wondering if it is worth getting a degree is that they are more concerned about the financial implications of pursuing a degree.
People have mortgages, special needs children, or take care of children already going to college. Obtaining a degree for many in this group means debt (or continued debt) is inevitable.
Is a degree important to be considered at a good legacy carrier? The proven and consistent answer is... YES!
Unfortunately, it seems like some believe that anyone asking about a degrees' worth are labeled as someone not wanting to do what is required to be competitive.
Keep in mind, it's more of a financial decision for some of them.

What the Average College Grad Makes Right Out of College
Have a decent major, a basket weaving degree is worthless.

I thank Sen Liz Warner (former college prof) and every other politician who pushes further liberalization of student loans. All of that student loan money sloshing around has driven up college tuition with a large chunk of the money going to administrators, professors, and unnecessarily lavish facilities.
It is a reality that a four year college degree is a critical square to fill if you want to fly at a legacy. It will be that way in five years and it will be that way in ten years. It will be that way in both times of pilot shortages and pilot surpluses. I don't see it changing any time soon. And in spite of all of the hype, there's not really a pilot shortage right now.

Do you get paid more if you have an aviation psychology degree when you're saying "would you like fries with that?"

Plenty of people I know make a very nice living out of flying without a degree and invested very little compared to their degreed counterparts doing the same thing. With flow programs, why in the ******* would you get one?
You say if there's a downturn or what not, well then that person can collect unemployment for maybe 2 years depending on how bad it is and get that college degree they never got on the front end. Except now they're getting paid to attend school, with recall prospects should he/she decide the other career is not for them.

Look. You know you're going to have to get the degree. You can't rationalize your way out of this one. But there are ways to do it that aren't so expensive. 25K for an online degree sounds really costly to me. You can take as many classes as possible at a community college. Test out and get credit for others. Take night or weekend classes. Take some of the courses online. Get a useful degree in something that you're interested in. You can figure out a way to do this. A college degree is something you will always have, a job in aviation is not guaranteed. You have no idea what the future holds.
