Dave Ramsey show had a guy call in that was 274k in debt for a 4 year in accounting. Pretty much ruined for the better part of his life.

Actually better than some people I've heard call in. Getting in that kind of debt for a degree in nutrition, or English, with no job in sight. And they're talking about going into more debt to get a Masters degree

Some are proving my point.
Many are admitting to PAYING for their kids college!

How easy would it be for your kids to get a college degree without your funding or having them going into major debt?
That is the reality of someone who wasn't born with rich parents or a major airline daddy or mommy to pay the college bill.
I should have rephrased my comment, some aren't aware how difficult it is to pay for college on your own WITHOUT debt or parents.
It is a financial question for some people, not a drive or motivation question.
Factor in life, a family, low regional pay, and we will continue to have the degree question brought up every two weeks in this forum. :-)

It'd be nice if every major required a college degree. Then threads like these wouldn't have to exist.

Define major. DOT's defined it as an airline that has more than $1B in annual revenues. I don't think that definition's changed for many, many years so it includes Sun Country Airlines and several 'regional' airlines. The definition should probably be raised quite a bit.

I can't even find the definition of a national airline anymore.

I was in the same.position a few years ago. I decided to take out a loan and finish the degree. I don't have any plan to go to a legacy. Let's say I change my mind, and apply, but never get a call. I don't want to wonder if the lack of the degree is the reason.

Not having a degree is not a loser mentality, settling for less is. Pick a major that is worth something like engineering, finance, etc..

I have nothing against the Flows, a few LAA guys do though.

I cannot believe people who want to be in the top 5% (income wise) would argue for less education.

I'll say this (as someone who is strongly opposed to going into massive debt for a college degree)...

This industry is in a big hiring boom right now. In a few years the story could very well be much different. If you want the best shot of a good job at a legacy or major, get the degree. As long as you don't have to go into massive amounts of debt for it. I'm currently working 2 jobs, and I manage my own rental property. I'm putting my wife through college right now and we both help take care of my disabled mom. Finishing college just isn't a reality for me at the moment. I'm 3 classes away from an Associates and it will be finished in the next couple years. I have very little debt (zero school debt) and I refuse to go into it for a degree. If you have the means to get a degree without debt (which I'd venture to guess more people do than they might think), then do it.

Did you read my post? It is not difficult, I wouldn't say easy but not difficult. If you want something you do it. Also making my kids buy their own vehicles and pay for insurance.

I'm currently in a bit of a pickle deciding on my next move to make myself a more desirable and qualified applicant. Unfortunately when I started flying, I had enough saved to either finish my flight ratings or go to college.

My current situation allows for one of two options. Stay debt free, keep plugging away at my regional job flying 90 hours with 12 days off in month. Volunteer my time on days off to causes that could genuinely use a helping hand; be productive and offer some real help.

Option two- take out student loans to finish an online degree in my free time. Would wind up digging myself a $25,000 hole and take about 3 years to wrap up. I'm ok with that if it would put me in a position to be hired by a company that pays better than a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle.

I talk with guys in the jumpseat that say 5 years from now, the big three will be hiring guys without a degree on a regular basis. I'm looking for your opinions because I don't want to look back and say 'I should have started the degree years ago because now I'm stuck here' or 'I should have never taken out the loans and done the degree because it wasn't even needed.'
You need a degree. Always have and always will.....

It's worth the debt to make yourself marketable....

I knew a guy who had flown with my regional for a long time.... He kept saying "they will hire me without a degree because I'm very experienced....." Sure enough they did not.

This guy I'm thinking of finally got his online degree and got hired-but his stubbornness cost him at least 10 years at a major.
