Not to say you won’t be first in line for training, but don’t expect them to extend the contract if you don’t have your 1,460 hours. The pilot pool is much bigger that you’re swimming in now. Remember, Mesa is a business who will make decisions that benefit the business first. Sadly if that means no longer honoring that contract and asking for the $10,000 back then it sucks but again, it’s a business. I’d say you’re 100% correct on being first in line for training but ONLY if you’re at 1,460 hours by the time they start training again. Remember, pilots are needed as much as they used to be, so the business decisions are going to be taking a complete 180. I for example was given years of extension to my cadet contract, matter of fact they never even brought it up once that I was taking awhile to get my hours, they didn’t care they just needed me as soon as humanly possible. The markets changed now and it sucks for people who didn’t make it into a class date before this, I feel for you. I hope all works out in your favor

I’d say that you’re right. Mesa management has always done what is best for Mesa management. I really doubt that they extend much of anything by the time that hiring at Mesa resumes since the need to do so is gone. They will have a list of furloughed United pilots that they have to offer jobs to, as well as a big stack of resumes from high time rj pilots who are looking for work. That guy just short of ATP minimums probably isn’t even remotely in the running for an airline job until the legacies recall everyone and hiring starts back up again. In the span of a few short month we went from the regionals hiring people right at the minimums, paying for their ATP, and paying large signing bonuses, to today when the labor market is flooded with pilots with 10,000+ hours of 121 jet time. You can’t make this stuff up.

Which is why I don’t see why all of these cadets are getting excited. I understand that you signed a contract pre-Covid, but the sad truth is that Mesa is going to hire all of those with ATPs and 121 time before they train a cadet. I hate to be a downer, but it’s the truth.

The United pilots will have recall rights and they will definitely leave, but the thousands of really good pilots from TSA, XJT, Compass, and who ever might be next, have nowhere to go. It isn’t like the legacies hire everyone with an application turned in. An airline would get years of highly experienced pilots on the list and not have to train someone who has zero experience. Not a dig against the new guys, everyone was that guy once, but if I were hiring and given the choice between a former E145 pilot with thousands of hours, or a pilot with minimum ATP requirements and a few hours in a dutchess, I’ll hire the experienced pilot every time.

I have knowledge through a friend on a hiring committee that certain ULCC's will pass on your experienced guy with thousands of hours precisely because he has lots of options. Some companies want lower qualifications because they want more time before the employee leaves. You really think JO cares if a pilot has 10,000 hours or 1,500 as long as the job gets done. He likely wants the pilot he can keep the longest when things turn around.
Agreed

Yeah I could only imagine the training costs are just a slight bit less for someone already coming in with experience vs not
