Outright slavery seems to me like an ignorant use of the word slavery. There are actual slaves that would have loved to have been paid $30,000 for a job with something that resembles benefits. It really isn't even indentured servitude which is the next closest thing to slavery.
I have no problem using hyperbole or metaphors. Come on, though. It's not even remotely close to slavery to anything that resembles being owned by another person and them forcing you to work 20 hour days for literally nothing.

Side topic here, but as a Mesa pilot it really ticks me off when I hear what our recruiters are feeding these guys.
Recruiters - If you're reading this I'd like to know how you sleep at night, feeding this garbage to unsuspecting, ambitious, young pilots. Seriously, in the most polite terms that I can - forget you. Why don't you go find a different job that pays you the same money? I doubt you're making that much from Mesa by recruiting, go get a better job that doesn't require you stoop to levels at which you apparently already are.
If you're a pilot recruiter for Mesa, here's a list of jobs that probably pay the same, but are better jobs than what you do and will also provide you with a sense of honor and will still let you sleep at night:
- Garbage collector, walmart greeter, debt collector, poop scooper at the zoo, burger flipper, dog walker, paper delivery, lawn mower, school custodian, substitute teacher, brick layer, car washer, I could go on.
If you're a pilot recruiter for Mesa, how does it make you feel that all those jobs are more valuable to society than what you do? If you're a yv pilot recruiting on the side, do everyone a favor and go back to the line. Quit peddling these jobs for JO, please. One of you recruiters just sold a large truckload of BS to the person who posted earlier and I'm sure he's not the only one. Come on, you're dealing with someone's career, their livelihood, their future... Do you feel good about this?
It might be a good idea for you to save some money for the counseling you will need in the future.
If you are a recruiter for Mesa, your conversation should sound like this:
"We are currently hiring FOs for new 175 growth and for attrition because any FO with brains gets the hell out of Mesa, unless they are close to an upgrade. The upgrade time is impossible to foresee but the 15-18 month upgrade is gone, that ship has sailed. If you come to Mesa, you'll be looking at $22 on year one, $29 in year 2, finally breaking $30 in year 3. You're flight instructor buddies who went elsewhere will be laughing at you as they make more money and spend less on health insurance. Instead of being a part of a company with a management team that wants to fix the problems and actually recruit quality pilots, we will continue to see Instagram gimmicks and bonuses for attracting pilots. You will be on RSV for God knows how long and that awesome line that you can't wait to hold, won't be so awesome. As a junior line holder, you'll enjoy your weekly 30 hour overnights, keeping you at your min guarantee and min days off."
Why anyone would come to Mesa right now, in light of what other regionals now have to offer, is beyond me.
The only saving grace for Mesa right now is their training department, which could teach a braindead monkey to fly a jet, and in these times of desperation, often does.
