I'm glad the early upgrade worked out for you, but consider upgrade times in overall compensation calculations is just promoting low pay.
Ok...so let's not even consider upgrading at an LCC. Allegiant's second year FO rate is still $2/hr more than Mesa's 20 year CA rate on the 175. Being stuck in the right seat at G4, home every night, and making anything better than first year pay beats the pants off of what we have here at Mesa. And that's not even getting into the finer points such as healthcare.

But of course I say this as someone who lives 10 minutes from G4's largest domicile and commutes to the lovely city of Houston for my current gig.

What's wrong with Houston. I assume you are comparing it with Florida? I forgot how great Florida is with all the low wages, poor schools, worst health care in the nation, sex predators in every community and crime and on every corner. Just going to the gas station for milk is like driving in Kabul. Sure Houston has the same crime issues but at least it's confined to certain areas of the city.

HahahahahahH. Confined to some areas my arse! Houston is out of control ever since Katrina brought all the lovely people of Louisiana here.

Lived in both. Houston a 100 times better. You can actually raise a family here vs Florida. Sure go to east Houston and yes its just as bad if not worse. But you have pockets in the city where you can live without looking over your shoulder. Florida down right awful. Do a predator search in any zip code and you will find dozens or hundreds in Florida. I have one in a 5 mile radius.

Orlando got the other half of Katrina. I love Florida its a lot of fun but raising a family there is a scary thought.

I was speaking of the commute. Houston has nice parts and not so nice parts of town just like anywhere else, but the relentless beating it takes from thunderstorms and flooding makes it extremely difficult for commuting purposes. Go home leg on my last two trips has been into IAH with the TAF reading "TSRA 2SM" and not knowing if we are going to make it in, much less make it out on a commute home. I guess I am spoiled because previously I commuted in and out of PHX, which has virtually unlimited CAVUK weather.

I could always move to Houston but I dread the thought of moving for Mesa. I am junior CA and I would rather just leave if I can UNLESS we opened a domicile in Austin or San Antonio, then I would be all down to go back home.

Could always move to Houston and stay until UA or SW calls. Then you aren't moving for Mesa, you are moving for life.

Is it too late to not be "locked into"? My encouragement, look for something additional where you are paid based on your value and merits. There is plenty of downtime with any flying work to build other opportunities. Why not have the best of both worlds?

The "downtime" otherwise known as your life.

Sure. Make productive use of your downtime; overnights, dead terminal time, travel time, etc.

Long time lurker & first time poster here. I second that about raising kids in Florida. The reason for the nickname "Garbage can of south".
