Claiming UPT time
#21
I interviewed at UAL today and just handed them my form 5 and the excel spreadsheet from APC.com. I tweaked the formulas a little bit and counted half of my post AC upgrade other time towards my PIC and added some noted to justify the numbers. When the interviewers greeted me this morning, the first thing they asked for was my log books. I gave them 3 pieces of paper (2 from form 5 and the excel spreadsheet). The HR person was not expecting that, but the interviewing captain was prior AF and knew what it was. Not a single question was asked about my flight time during the interview.
If any of you would like to see my version of the flight time calculator and how I tweaked the formulas, just PM me w/ your email address and I'll send it your way.

I wonder how many more are with us in the Post 4 Sep Loony Bin Board. I know of at least 5 or 6 including you and me.
Like I told you on the phone, I hope the United interview from today was successful and hoping for a successful CAL interview next Tuesday. I sure hope I don't go 0 for 3!

this is a good thread..Ive been contemplating myself how to deal with student time. I think the easiest way for me and to keep things simple is to just bring in my AFORMS and make sure Ive flown enough time to not have to rely on student time other than for my TT overall.
On a seperate note..for the guys that have been interviewing..have you seen reservists getting hired?? I have heard from a few buds that they have had trouble getting hired still being in the reserves..of course hard to prove. Just curious for some opinions

since we are on the topic...
if you apply to a company that doesn't specify what the conversion factor is for military flight time, which do you do? I know that the APC has a spreadsheet that adds both .2 and .3 to each sortie??
Thanks

For CAL and DAL, airline apps does the conversion for you so just put in your raw time and number of sorties. SWA says to use a .3 factor. UAL says to not a conversion. Read what I wrote earlier about "other" time. I factored in half of my other time into my PIC. I explained my method in both my DAL and UAL interview and zero questions were asked and there was no contention from the Captain or HR in either interview.
Referencing an earlier post about reserves not getting hired. I got the conditional hire from Delta and I'm a reservist. Unfortunately, I"m in the DAL loony bin right now (psych tests results under review and go to a review board in a couple of weeks....hence the loony bin comment).
There was some scuttlebutt about reservists interviewing at CAL about a year ago, but I'm not sure how that panned out. I do have a personal friend who went through a rough period of time with CAL when he took mil leave but has been recently resolved [in his favor]. I also heard about SWA and Charleston reservists. I don't want to get into details about that because that is not in my "back yard" and if I'm sure a Charleston reservist will explain it on here if he/she feels it is worthwhile.
At my DAL interview, one of the military guys who interviewed, but not get hired, openly talked about mil leave during his interview. If that was a major factor in him not getting hired, I don't know.
I was not asked about the reserves in today's interview. They asked for a resume and it was clear on my resume that I am an active reservist. I don't think it was an issue with UAL.

Most companies care about 3 times. Total time, total PIC, and total turbine. Put your student time as student time, except for the 9 hours in the tweet and 4 hrs in the T-1 team ride (T-38s and non-AF use best judgement). DAL and NetJets did not look or ask about hours (although NJA has you fill out some crazy hr sheets for the app). I used my AFORMS printouts. Both were interested in the TMAAT stuff. NJA, btw, has no problem with reservists. I don't think DAL does either.

It doesn't matter, its military time...by that reasoning if a guy was lazy and never added his type rating after AC Upgrade, he could never log PIC even after he was an AC, since he wasn't technically type-rated. Then there's another twist...the San Antonio FSDO told me they actually consider us "PIC's" after our NAV/Instrument Checkride...which is 1.5 months before we graduate and get our wings, and the guy told me I could log everything after that as PIC (which I didn't to be conservative). Twist #2, the FAR/aim while I was in UPT allowed me to log SIC, but all of the SIC rules were rearranged in this year's FAR/AIM...if I was in UPT now, well I would have to talk to the FSDO for guidance...According to 61.55, I wasn't legal to even occupy that seat. An IP once told me, when in doubt, Primary = PIC, Secondary = SIC, Other = nothing. Twist #3...UPT time is logged as 95% Primary (And then becomes "Student TIme" in ARMS)

How does Sim Time play into the PIC time? The Qual Check is done in the Sim for the C-17....that has to count for something since it point to the level of realism the sim provides.
C-17 Driver: What is the logic behind the 50/50 split of other time. I for instance recall very few occasations since my AC cert in the C-17 that I was the "A" Code. Does the other time logged as "A" code time count to PIC total?
