7 Day Opt
#1
Anyone have any experience recently with the 7 Day Opt? I am currently under 2 years to my ADSC (Apr 2012) and the assignment options on my plate are none too pretty (apparently guys are now being non-vol'd to staff...who knew?). I am particularly interested in how the DOS is established. The reg says the member can request a DOS no later than the last day of their longest ADSC, but the needs of the service can override this. What I do not want to have happen is to 7 day opt and be told that I'll be separating 30, 60, or even 180 days later. This is a 180 degree change from what I was expecting and I would like to have at least 12 months of lead time to get the ATP, finances in order, job search, etc.

My experience, although it was a few years ago, is that if you have greater than 12 mos retainability they'll retain you so they can send you remote for a year and suck up some bad deal they can't get a non-quitter to do.
I've never seen them make a pilot get out earlier than they wanted in this situation, but I have seen them force him to take an assignment he didn't want.
Remember, you're not turning down the assignment, you're turning down the commitment associated with the assignment.

Not trying to overwhelm you, but here's some other things to consider:
- How many years of service do you have? Any promotion boards coming up? Pulling the 7 day option makes you the Wing/CC's #100 of 100 Captains.
- Do you have a guard/reserve job lined up?
- How many gate months do you have (or will you have when you PCS to a non-flying job)? Getting all of your gates now = possibility of finishing a career behind a desk. Sucking up a staff job midcareer = return to fly later and improve your chances of getting hired later.
Sorry I don't have the answer to your exact question, but just some other things to consider when it's time to pull the trigger.

If you turn down the assignment (7 day opt) you will be retained until your ADSC is up... that means you will get an assignment... and it won't be pretty... only thing that you have protecting you is that you cannot incur any additional ADSC from what AFPC will do to you. My guess is you will get a one year remote or 365... problem you will run into is not being current flying status and getting a job outside the AF.
Make sure you think this through... big decision. Good Luck.
